Followup-To: torbey@ctr.columbia.edu Organization: Columbia University Center for Telecommunications Research Keywords: Bioposis The Borg stories (QW and TBOBW ) remind me of a similar story I read in french from authors K.H. Sheer and C. Darlton. (Actually the original work is published in German). In the Sheer/Darlton story there is an Earth-led Galactic Federation ruling the better part of the Milky Way. The Federation is attacked by invaders coming from the intergalactic void separating the Milky Way and Andromeda. The invaders ships are huge cubic-shaped, with invulnerable screens (the screens are time displaced a few hours into the future) and with powerful supra-dimensional weapons (they dematerialize an energy weapon then rematerialize it behind the enemy shields. Nasty stuff!). The invaders themselves are robots with organic brains, part of a single all-powerful half-mechanic, half organic entity. They are capable of merging together into more powerful units. These enemy are called the Bioposis. The Bioposis are fast learners. As soon as the Federation develops an effective weapon/defense they adapt and defeat it. Even a whole federation fleet is no match for one of the Bioposis cube. The Bioposis attack and destroy any organic life. Well, the war went very badly for the Federation and its planets began to be reduced to atomic nebulae one after the other. Most of the principal Federation worlds were destroyed/under siege. Earth was not attacked because its galactic coordinates were carefully kept secret. Finally the Federation succeeded in making contact with the organic half of the master entity, found out the origin of the Bioposis' hate for any organic life (a faulty interaction between the organic and mechanical halves caused the mechanical component to consider any organic life a threat to its other half. The mechanical half was the one in charge of the defense of the whole). So after this misunderstanding was cleared the Federation got on with the business of picking up the pieces. They made an alliance with the Bioposis and got pretty friendly with them ,...... I forgot, there is also a mischievous god-like creature appearing and disappearing at will, nonetheless giving the humans a helping hand when things are really bad. By the way, this is an ongoing series published by Fleuve Noir in Paris (besides the Germans of course). The Bioposis storyline ran from 1984-1988. Makes you say, Hmmmmmm!!!
