XAfter a brief recap of part one, we see the weapon charge up, and fire.
XIt hits dead-on\-and \f2nothing\f1 happens to the Borg ship.
XAfter the Enterprise is forced to cease fire before the engines burn out,
Xthe surprised bridge crew is informed by Locutus that everything Picard
Xever knew is now part of the Borg: ``Your resistance is hopeless...\f2Number
XOne\f1.''
X
XStardate 44001.4: The Borg resume course, with the Enterprise powerless to
Xpursue: as expected, their main deflector is out, as are shields and the
Xreactor core.
XIt's going to be 8-12 hours for repair, as they tell Admiral Hansen.
X
XRiker, however, reassures Hansen that, even if late,
Xthe Enterprise \f2will\f1 be at Wolf-359.
XHansen tells them that they bought the Federation valuable time:
Xthey've got 40 starships massed, the Klingons are sending ships, and they even
Xconsidered opening communications with the Romulans.
XHansen bristles when Shelby says Picard is working with the Borg,
Xand says to all concerned that Picard, their captain and his longtime friend,
Xis a casualty of war.
XHe field-promotes Riker to Captain, and wishes everyone good luck.
X
XAfter a brief shot of Picard being altered further on the ship (having a
Xprosthetic Borglike claw being inserted over his right hand, and having his
Xcoloration paled to that of the others), we see Riker (now with 4 pips on his
Xuniform) talking to Worf about strategy, primarily the question of fighting
Xagainst someone who knows you better than you do.
X
XThey arrive in Engineering, where Geordi,
XShelby and others are working on repairs.
XThe deflector's back up, and the reactor core is almost working,
Xbut auxiliary generators keep going down:
Xthere's probably 2-3 hours left of work.
XRiker commends Shelby for her away team duty,
Xand says he wants her to keep him on his toes.
XWhen she remarks that that's usually the duty of a first officer,
Xhe tells her she has a lot to learn:
X``almost as much as I had to learn when I came on board as Captain
XPicard's first officer, which he remarked on when I told him what a
Xpain in the neck you were.''
X
XHansen calls from Wolf-359, and says the battle does not go well\-then
Xcommunications are abruptly severed.
XAs the repaired Enterprise heads for Wolf-359, Riker tells Data, Worf,
Xand everyone else that he needs them where they are,
Xand somewhat reluctantly makes Shelby his first.
XThe senior crew discuss possibilities: the heavy graviton beam won't do enough,
Xnewly destructive Nanites (!!) would take too long to engineer (2-3 weeks),
Xand all the newly adapted phasers (adapted to be random with every shot)
Xwill do is slow them down.
X
XRiker arrives in Picard's ready room and asks the empty chair,
X``What would \f2you\f1 do?''
XGuinan suddenly barges in, saying she's just ``used to having the Captain's
Xear'', and reports to Riker:
Xmorale is very bad\-everyone's expecting to die tomorrow,
Xand only Riker can turn it around.
XShe says that he must do something very difficult: let go of Picard.
X(When he argues that he tried to \f2kill\f1 Picard yesterday,
Xshe claims that he was trying to kill ``that thing on the Borg ship'',
Xnot Picard.) She tells him that her relationship with Picard goes beyond
Xfriendship and family, and she's prepared to let him go.
XHe must as well\-there's only room for one Captain, and he's it.
X
XThe Enterprise arrives at Wolf-359, where it finds the fleet\-in pieces.
XStarship wreckage is everywhere, with no life signs \f2anywhere\f1.
XShelby (now with three full pips on her uniform,
Xby the way) mentions three dead ships by name:
Xthe Tolstoi, the Kyushu\-and the Melbourne.
XThey find traces of the Borg's trail and follow.
XHe orders Shelby to prepare to separate the saucer,
Xremarking that he's counting on Picard having been briefed on that tactic,
Xand then tells Data and Worf he has a special mission for them.
X
XLocutus sees the Enterprise approaching on the Borg viewscreen (also cubical,
Xand rotating!),
Xand hears ``Captain William T. Riker of the starship Enterprise'' hailing.
XLocutus demands an unconditional surrender, and dismisses Riker's
Xwish to talk terms as a deception, until Riker points out that Picard trusted
Xhim implicitly and that he's never lied to Picard.
XHe then simply terms it irrelevant.
X(The sensors, meanwhile, manage to pinpoint Locutus's position to
Xwithin 30 meters, but the Borg EM field has been adapted to prevent the main
Xtransporter from working.)
XWhen Riker asks for time, Locutus says it's not necessary,
Xand threatens them with destruction if they intervene.
X
XRiker says that Locutus had better take his best shot,
Xand all hell breaks loose.
XCommunications are scrambled (code Riker-1), the saucer separates,
Xand the stardrive opens fire.
XThe Borg, ignoring the saucer,
Xtry to lock onto the stardrive with the tractor beam.
XThe stardrive evades (with maneuvers Riker-alpha and Riker-beta),
Xand Riker signals Shelby (commanding the saucer) to commence her attack.
XShe does so, launching antimatter charges, which seem to confuse Locutus a bit.
XMeanwhile, Data and Worf launch their shuttle,
Xcutting their engines when it looks like the power's been sensed,
Xand penetrate the EM field.
XOnce inside the field, they beam in close to Locutus, subdue the
Xfew Borg near him, stun him, beam back to the shuttle, leave the Borg field,
Xand are beamed off milliseconds before the Borg destroy the shuttle.
X
XThe saucer has sustained impulse damage, and the Borg power back up and leave,
Xheading for Earth again, as the Enterprise reconnects and pursues.
XMeanwhile, Bev studies Locutus, whose DNA is apparently being \f2rewritten\f1
Xnear all the implants.
XRiker, hoping the Picard/Borg link goes both ways, has Bev wake Locutus,
Xwho calls the stratagem ill-advised and futile (saying ``Picard never
Xwould have approved'' of risking all for one man), but says he means no harm,
Xand will simply continue to speak for the Borg as they head for Earth.
X
XData finds that Locutus is linked into the Borg consciousness via a
Xtransporter-like subspace field.
XIt's jammable, but would probably cause Locutus to
Xself-destruct just as the damaged Borg did when they were cut off (the severing
Xbeing what was done whenever Borg had bits taken off them).
XUntil that link is down, however,
XBev cannot ``separate the man from the machine.''
XData then decides to try to access the machine.
XAfter Locutus says the Borg merely wish
Xto improve the ``quality of life'' for all species,
Xand says they will all become
Xone with the Borg (except for Data, who will be obsolete), Bev knocks him out
Xand Data takes him to his (Data's) lab.
XMeanwhile, Shelby reports that the Borg have entered sector 001,
Xas we see the Borg swing by Saturn.
X
XPlanetary defenses are up and functioning, but aren't expected to do much good.
XWorse yet, the Borg are only 27 minutes away from Earth at current speed,
Xand the Enterprise is at least 42 minutes away from intercept.
XMeanwhile, Data tries to establish a neural link between himself and Locutus,
Xwith Bev checking Picard's vital signs, O'Brien monitoring Data's stats,
Xand Troi scanning for any sign of Picard's consiousness.
XAs the first stage of the 3-stage link is established,
Xno important progress is made
X(as the Mars perimeter is swept aside with no effort).
XThe second stage is equally unrewarding, but the final link
Xhits the jackpot: as both systems run a little wild, Data links into the Borg
Xconsciousness, where he mentions his discoveries: although the Borg have
Xsubcommands relative to the three main functions (defense, communication and
Xnavigation), they all have root commands.
XAs he's about to go into details, though, Locutus revives,
Xknocks out a security guard, and almost deactivates
Xthe link, until Data grapples with him and rips off the tool-portion of his
Xright-hand prosthetic.
X
XBev picks up increased neural activity, and Deanna finds that, despite no real
Xsuccess on Data's part, Picard's consciousness is starting to revive.
XThe Borg, meanwhile, have stopped (clearly they're paying attention to this),
Xand move to intercept the Enterprise,
Xjust as Data and Bev figure out the Achilles heel:
Xthey cannot cut the link to Locutus,
Xany more than we could cut off a leg and survive.
XRiker orders Data to plant a command in the Borg consciousness to disarm,
Xbut Data cannot (either to disarm or to power down),
Xas all high-level commands are protected.
XThe Borg lock on to the Enterprise, and weapons do no good.
X
XRiker orders a collision course and warp power, but Data asks him to stand by,
Xas Picard (\f2not\f1 Locutus) says ``sleep'' to Data,
Xwho takes it as a suggestion.
XAs Data acts on this, the Borg cutter breaks through the outer hull, and is
Xabout to break through the inner...when suddenly, it stops and sits dormant.
XWorf finds the weapons have powered down, and the EM field is nonexistent.
XWhen Riker asks what happened, Data tells him that he put the Borg into
Xregeneration mode\-in effect, he put them to sleep.
X
XWorf and Shelby beam over to check, and confirm that, but also find that the
Xmalfunction has triggered a self-destruct.
XDespite Bev's warning that the ship's destruction might be very dangerous
Xto Picard, and Data's thoughts of further study, Riker lets the destruct go on,
Xand they steer clear as the Borg ship goes up in smoke.
XThe destruction shakes Picard up a little, but frees
Xhim, and despite the granddaddy of all headaches, he feels ``almost human.''
XWhen Riker asks him how much he remembers, he replies, ``Everything\-including
Xsome brilliantly unorthodox strategy from a former first officer of mine.''
X
XSome time later, Picard has been disconnected from all the prosthetics (though
Xhis head's still bandaged), and the Enterprise still has 5-6 weeks of repairs
Xdue at Earth Station McKinley.
XThe door rings to the ready room, and both
XPicard and Riker say, ``Come.''
XIt's Shelby, who's about to leave to take over
Xthe task force that's going to rebuild the fleet.
XWhen she says that Riker should have his pick of commands,
Xhe says ``with all due respect, Commander...
Xsir...my career plans are my own business, and no one else's.''
XShe leaves, as does Riker.
XPicard picks up his tea, but stops as he's about to drink, puts the tea down,
Xand stares out his window, as the Enterprise sweeps majestically past Earth.

X-
X- Some people have asked what to do with the files once they ftp the files
X- because they've never used tar, so here's what they should do:
X-
X- uncompress sttng.ps.nc.tar.Z
X- tar xvf sttng.ps.nc.tar
X- lpr *.ps
X-
X- You may want to change the lpr command above to lp, or whatever your system
X- has as the print spooler.
X-
X- If transferring the files to a SysV UNIX system, be careful to change the name
X- of the longer file names.
X-
X- Other files may be available. Check with cfogg@milton.u.washington.edu for
X- details. Always give Chad a couple of days to get the latest files ready after
X- I release them.

X! The Enterprise crew travels to Angel One, a planet run by women, to

X! collision seven years earlier.
X!
X! The away team discovers that the survivors, all men, are fugitives on the

X!
X! Meanwhile, the Enterprise crew, including Captain Picard, is ravaged by
X! a highly contagious virus that Wesley and a friend contracted during a

X! At the same time, the ship is needed in the
X! Neutral Zone to ward off hostile Romulan battlecruisers.
X!
X! After the away team leaves them, the Angel One fugitives are discovered
X! and sentenced to death. Despite the fact that it violates the Prime
X! Directive, Riker prepares to beam the fugitives to the safety of the
X! Enterprise. However, Dr. Crusher prohibits all boarding, except for the

X! impresses the Angel One leader, who decides not to execute the fugitives.

X! Picard sends down an away team (letting Troi do the talking),
X! after Mistress Beate grudgingly permits the visit.
X!
X! They first encounter only evasions and distrust.
X! Some time later, after extracting a promise from the away team that they
X! will take the survivors away,
X! Beate gives them several crucial facts: there are four survivors,
X! led by a man named Ramsey, and, more importantly,
X! they are fugitives on this world.
X! Back on the ship, Wesley and several of his classmates have contracted a
X! respiratory ailment after a skiing trip on the holodeck,
X! and Beverly cannot as yet figure out how it's transmitted.
X!
X! The away team (minus Riker, who stays behind and is seduced by Beate) locates
X! Ramsey, where they discover all is not as it seems.
X! Ramsey and his fellows have learned to love this planet,
X! but are crusading for equality.
X! As they are civilians, the Enterprise cannot forcibly take them.
X! As they return and express their regrets to Beate,
X! she replies that she must then sentence them to death.
X! Meanwhile, the time is drawing closer to a probable encounter with the Romulans
X! in the Neutral Zone, and the virus has spread to the point where both Picard and
X! Worf are out of action, leaving Geordi in command.
X!
X! Riker and his team prepare to depart, expecting that Ramsey will manage to stay
X! uncaught for a long time, but as they make their preparations, Ramsey is led in.
X! Even in the face of certain death, however, Ramsey and his men are adamant\-they
X! and their families would rather die than leave.
X! Riker attempts to take them by force, but is forbidden to beam up by
X! Dr. Crusher, who has declared a medical emergency.
X! Riker sends up Data, the only crewmember who is safe from the infection,
X! with orders to get to the Neutral Zone ``before it is too late.''
X!
X! Data interprets Riker's orders literally, and stays in orbit as long as he can.
X! Riker makes one final plea to Beate before Ramsey's scheduled execution,
X! convincing her that she's fighting, not a revolution, but \f3evolution\f1.
X! Beate calls a last-second halt to the execution,
X! and she and the council decide to exile Ramsey and his followers instead.
X! Beverly finds the inoculant to the virus,
X! and the ship heads for the Neutral Zone.
