mholtz@sactoh0.SAC.CA.US (Mark A. Holtz) (11/02/90)
I had an opportunity to attend the Creation Con in San Jose on October 28th
with guest Denise Crosby. (More on her later). Also present was Richard
Arnold.
Richard stated at the con that he is not being paid by Paramount to go to
conventions. Instead, he is a paid guest of Creation Con. He passed along
the following information:
-=> Star Trek Six <=-
There will be a Star Trek 6, however, there is no script, producer, or
director signed yet. Neither Leonard Nimoy (boo) or William Shatner (YEAH!)
will be directing.
It looks very unlikely now that the film will be released on September 8th,
1991. However, it could be released anytime between 1966 and 1969 and still
be considered part of the 25th Anniversary. (hah hah).
-=> Star Trek: The Next Generation <=-
Upcoming Episodes:
These episode titles are being listed with the official Paramount "week-of"
dates. (I did double-check Mike Brown's listing).
Legacy - (October 29-November 4) As has been stated over and over on the
net, this is the episode which we visit the failed colony . . . Tasha Yar's
home planet. It is known for sure that Denise Crosby is not guest staring
in this episode, though it wouldn't surprise me if Denise is watching this
episode. ;). Expect people to be making a lot of comparisons between the
Yars. No surprises here.
The Reunion - (November 5-11) This episode will be featuring heavily on
Klingon's, and will have K'mpec, K'Ehylar, and Duras returning. This
episode is being directed by Jonathan Frakes, who will be directing another
episode later on this season. Also, when asked whether or not Worf's honor
will be restored, Richard only said to "watch the episode".
It should be noted at this time that most of the Klingon costumes, as well
as many of the sets, date back to when they were considering a second Star
Trek series with most of the original crew . . . over 13 years ago. Many of
them, however, have been redressed many times, and somewhat updated.
Paramount doesn't like to waste money.
Future Imperfect - (November 12-18) While on a away team mission, Riker and
one other crew member is caught in a strange fog. Riker awakes 16 years
later on the Enterprise. However, there are some changes. First, Riker has
a teenage son named Jean-Luc. Second, there are no longer "pips" on the
uniform, instead the communicator/insignia contain the rank (4 Silver
Bars=Admiral, 4 Gold Bars=Captain). Third, there is an Admiral Picard on
board. Fourth, Troi becomes Picard's aide. Fifth, Commander Tomalak is now
an Ambassador. Sixth, there is the Romulan symbol on board. And no, I am
not applying smiley's here.
Final Mission - (November 19-25) In this episode, Captain Picard and Wesley
are in this shuttle run by this guy who seems to have obtained the shuttle
from the nearest rent-a-starheap. Naturally, the shuttle crashed on a
planet without water. The shuttle commander can't handle what is going on,
and Picard soon get injured, leaving you know who in charge.
Q (from me): "Will this episode be Wil Wheaton's last episode?"
A: "I didn't hear that."
Q: "Will Wesley be going to the academy?"
A: "Next question."
The Loss - (January) This episode will be dealing with Troi losing her
telepathic ability. Being Betazoid, losing one's telepathic ability is like
one of us going blind. She can no longer sense someone coming. Of course,
everyone comforts her . . . . including Riker.
Data's Day - (January) Not much was said about this episode, other than it
heavily features Vulcans, and we will see parts of the ship and people not
seen before. . . . from Data's point of view.
As for other business . . .
Riker's Rank - In regards to Riker being Captain in BOBW2 and Commander in
Family, we are simply comparing 24th century starfleet with 20th century
ways. Since Riker was given a field promotion, he was only temporarily
Captain. Since Picard is back, there are no ships available for command,
and Riker doesn't want command, he was back to commander as usual.
Otherwise, there would have been a Captain's ceremony. . . (Well, I had to
ask ;)
Q/Borg/etc. - They will be returning as soon as a good script comes in. For
obvious reasons, they won't overuse the guest characters. Speaking of
scripts, they have 10 fan-written scripts ready to be produced or have been
already been filmed and shown over the past 3.5 years.
Guiman - It'll be a while before we find out more about Guiman and her
race. Part of the problem is her erratic schedule in "Bagdad Cafe", her
charity work, and such, which prevents her for making any commitments until
the last minute. When she is available, many of the lines that were
originally written for Troi were rewritten for her. However, she enjoys
working on the show.
TNG on Video - CBS/Fox will be releasing TNG onto videotape slowly through
their video club. Obviously, there will be several years lag between the
show's air date and the video release date. If CBS/Fox is successful, we
know which video company will be doing the retail release.
Fan Mail - Wil Wheaton gets the most fan mail . . . enough to fill two mail
bins. The rest of the crew combined also fill up a mail bin. It is Gene's
policy that the mail actually gets answered by the actors, unlike some
other shows which simply count the mail and toss into file 13.
Patrick Stewart and BOBW - Poor Patrick. When they were filming the scenes
in Data's lab, Patrick was virtually wearing nothing . . . and it can be
very cold on a sound stage due to the amount of air conditioning used to
keep those lights cold. (It was also a nice birthday present for Patrick :)
:) :) :) :) Many of the Borg add-ons were held in place using glue, thus
taking those props off his skin was more painful than pulling off a
band-aid.
Mike Brown's TNG Program Guide - Yes, folks, I brought that program guide
with me to Creation Con. Whenever I opened it and looked something up, I
managed to get several other people around me saying, "Where did you get
that guide?????" Some people were surprised as how complete that guide was
compared to the ones that were being sold at the convention. Those of you
who get the guide via the monthly update files don't really know how lucky
they are!
MIKE: Send me some business cards!!!!!!!!
-=> Denise Crosby <=-
Denise was an entertaining guest at Creation Con. My impression of her was
that she was still kind-of a little girl inside. Never the less, there was
still a loooooooonnnnnnnnggggggggg line for her autograph. (One per
customer, please).
One interesting note is that Denise originally tried out for the role of
Deanna Troi, while Marina Sirtis tried out for Yar. One of the scenes that
was used in the auditions is a scene which Yar is literally shaking from
being near a great man like Captain Picard. So, she seeks out Troi help.
Troi asks Yar if she had any sex with anyone on the ship. Yar responds that
no, she did not. Troi then tells her to try some sex and call her back in
two weeks. (Believe me, it sounded better on stage). This scene was
repeated with Yar being played by Crosby and so on. The rest is Trek
history.
In regards to her leaving the show, she responded that it was her own
decision to leave the show . . . no one asked her to leave. Part of the
problem is that she mainly had to say, "Hailing Frequencies Open/Closed."
She had suggested several storylines, including visiting her home planet,
but, after a long talk with Gene Roddenberry, she decided to leave,
partially because her full potential (which Gene realized) was not going to
be realized on the show, since the action seemed to be concentrated on the
main three: Picard, Riker, and Data.
But, why did they have to kill Yar? Part of the reason is that it was
considered taboo for a TV show to kill off a principal character, and this
would surprise and shock the audience. However, part of this effect was
lost because it was leaked through the computer networks that Yar was going
to die.
Her favorite episode of Star Trek: TNG is "Yesterday's Enterprise". Part of
the reason is because she had more of a role in the show as a guest star
than as a regular character. Another reason is that she had an opportunity
to work with Whoopie Goldberg, a person she very much admires.
She enjoyed working on Pet Semetary, and is a Stephen King, and had an
opportunity to visit him during the filming. Strange note: Stephen King
does live on Jolt cola.
Denise has finished filming two movies. One involves murder, the mafia,
prostitution, and such in Venice. Another is with Rick Torn (?) as a couple
who relocated in Mexico to open up a factory. However, strange things
happen. Like, an energy source.
You can also look forward to her appearing in a episode of WIOU, which will
be filmed the week of October 29th to be aired later.
-=> Other Interesting Info. <=-
And that's that. I did answer a question regarding Wolf-359 and the exact
stardate in BOBW2. Overall, it was worth a 4-hour round trip to San Jose.
NEXT REPORT: Jonathan Frakes will be visiting Sacramento the weekend of
November 17-18. Guess who will be taking notes. Guess who really cares. :)
