If you must see every tidbit about Star Trek, check out the March 1991 issue of SPY magazine. The editors staged a series of prank 'phone calls, purportedly from a personal manager of respected actors and directors, to television producers. SPY describes one such prank: "In mid-December [fake personal manager Jack] Fine phoned Rick Berman, an executive producer of the syndicated series Star Trek: The Next Generation, and asked whether there would be any interest in allowing the distinguished Japanese filmmaker Akira Kurosawa to direct an episode." The ensuing conversation appears on page 67 of the magazine, along with this imagined blurb for the resulting Rashomon-inspired episode: "Saturday 7:00 p.m. STAR TREK: THE NEXT GENERATION (CC); 60 min. Who knows the truth? Does Data (Brent Spiner) unwittingly become a Ferenghi pawn? Different crew members see things differently! Award-winning Japanese director Akira Kurosawa brings his special genius to American television." - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Larry Appleman P.O.
