I'll let the article do the talking. This is verbaitum and complete so don't ask me to add anything to it. From the Newark Star Ledger February 4, 1991 'Star Trek VI' turning into 'Mission Impossible' by Marilyn Beck and Stacy Jenel Smith HOLLYWOOD - Here's the latest on "Star Trek VI" - and it's not good news for Trekkies: Leonard Nimoy reveals that Paramount is having serious second thoughts about proceeding with production of what's been announced as the last of the big-screen "Star Trek" epics, and that at this point the project "is kind of dead in the water." "Star Trek VI," which was originally slated to go before the cameras last fall, has been awaiting the completion of a script. It's got one now, "a fine script by Nicholas Meyer," says Nimoy. "But last week things came untracked - Paramount decided it wanted to rethink the project. I think it, like a lot of studios, is re-evaluating what the marketplace is all about, what it should make and at what price. I'm waiting for a phone call from the Paramount people about the film, but at this point ... well, I suppose it could go either way." The actor/filmmaker feels "VI" could be made for less than the $30 million-plus "Star Trek V," which, he acknowledges, "didn't do terribly well." However, he stresses, there are still some big questions marks. Though casting notices went out this month saying there will be an April start date, the studio, he reveals, has never negotiated a "Star Trek VI" deal with either him or William Shatner. -- [=============================================================================] Dan Koft Email: koft@elbereth.rutgers.edu RU-CS, Rutgers University {backbone}!rutgers!elbereth!koft SERC, Busch Campus Phone: (908) 932-3216 Piscataway, NJ 08855 [=============================================================================] -- ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Edited by Jim "The Big Dweeb" Griffith - the official scapegoat for r.a.s.i. OK Guys and Gals, Acording to the host of a Creation Con here in Pittsburgh in yesterday, here is what he could tell us of Star Trek VI. I'll start with what I already knew and build to the good stuff. STAR TREK VI: THE UNDISCOVERED COUNTRY written and directed by Nicholas Meyer produced by Ralph Winter executive producer Leonard Nimoy music by James Horner starring William Shatner, Leonard Nimoy, and DeForest Kelley co-starring James Doohan, George Takei, Nichelle Nichols, and Walter Koenig None of the "good guys" will die, though some may be wounded (Chekov?). The set on Alaska was dropped due to budgetary constraints. ILM has finished storyboarding the effects for the movie, and is expected to begin work soon. Fans want a space battle but there was no mention of whether there would be one or not. The Klingons and the Romulans will both appear. Filming begins April 15, 1991 but may be pushed back to May 1 depending on if TNG runs behind schedule. The reason is, many of the sets used in VI will be redresses of TNG sets. Again this saves money since they already have these sets built. Robin Curtis will NOT play Saavik, though Saavik does appear in the film. A "notorious" Klingon from the past will return to haunt the crew. Considering how many of the named Klingons are dead, I suspect that it will be Kang or the Amabassador. One of the Klingons in the film will be related to a prominent Klingon in TNG. I suspect this will be one of Worf's ancestors. No mention was ever made about the time of the film, or Spock and Saavik ever having an intimate relationship. However, the current film uniforms WILL be used so I don't see a big jump in time after Trek V. Guest stars who have signed for the film include Jack Palance and Christopher Plummer. They're trying to get Whoopi Goldberg to play *Guinan*. Sarek is in the film but Mark Lenard has not signed. Nor has Bibi Besch, as Carol Marcus is also featured. George Takei was the guest of honor, and he was very happy with the turnout. The people at the Potemkin (the local ship for the official fan organization) said that this show had the biggest crowd in the area in 7 years (which also headlined Takei, that time right after the completion of Trek III). When asked of the rumor that Sulu would be captain of the Excelsior, George Takei neither confirmed nor denied it ("We were all sworn not to reveal anything about the film. The studio has ways of making you... well...") but was quoted as saying, "I am happy, and I'm smiling." When asked if VI was really the last one, Takei said, "I've read the script. They say that VI will definitely be the last one... but I don't think so. This one is going to be another Star Trek II, and Paramount's greed is such that they won't let the possibility for Star Trek VII go out the window... so I'm ready for Star Trek XXVI!"
