[rec.arts.startrek.info] Gene Roddenberry in "The Humanist"

asherman@uunet.UU.NET (Aaron Sherman) (05/03/91)

In the march/april issue of "The Humanist" there was a (VERY LARGE)
interview with Gene Roddenberry (for those of you who don't know
who he is, Roddenberry was the head writter for "Have Gun, Will
Travel"... ;)

It was quite interesting, but more from the Humanist side than the
trekkie (or is that oid). He speaks about how "Star Trek" brought
him back to thinking about religion, and how it is connected with
the philosophy of Humanism.

A lot went into the differences, on-camara and off, between the old
series and the new. He said that he felt that the studio was leaving
him alone a lot more than they did in the past, and that the censorship
is much less obnoxious, but that it's still there.

They also went into costs... The $1000 per phaser-shot figure was
brought up as well as the $1.3million per show.

Basically it was an interesting delve into what he thinks about
the series, I would recomend it to anyone who is curious about
where his ideas/attitudes come from.

PS: For those of you who don't know the American Humanist's Association
(AHA) is a group which is interested in approaching the world and
philosophy in terms of the scientiffic method, and/or in a non-theistic
way. That is not to say that all humanists are atheists (take Rodden-
berry for example), but rather that they do not place religious
doctrins/concerns above those of humanity. The president of the AHA
is Isaac Asimov.
For information about the humanists or "The Humanist" magazine
use the following address:
AHA
7 Harwood Dr. PO Box 146
Amherst, NY 14226-0146

or call: (716)839-5080

(I hope that peopple are not too put off by my including this, but
I wanted to make sure people knew where/how to find out more
info on where to get "The Humanist", and also what the AHA is,
since many people would want to know before buying one)
