[rec.arts.startrek.info] ST:TNG on Laserdisc - the scoop

brown@vidiot.UUCP (Vidiot) (06/17/91)

OK, after a couple of phone calls to track this problem down, I have the
information regarding the LD releases of ST:TNG.

Yes, they will be coming out with LDs of ST:TNG. That was pretty much
understood. They will be released after the tapes. The tapes are late
this year, with the LDs expected to be early next year. This is a guess on
this person's part, regarding the release date. No, I didn't catch his name
(it wasn't Richard Arnold :-), but he definately knows his ST:TNG stuff.

Now as for what is going to happen with "Encounter at Farpoint".... It will
be different yet again than what was aired. If you have the original airing
of the two hour premiere, then keep it. You will never see it that way again.
Production number 721 has basically been retired. It is from now on considered
as 101 and 102, i.e., two episodes. The tape and laserdisc will have it as
two parts, BUT, it will not be the butchered version. It will be the 2hr
premiere cut into two pieces with separate credits. Nothing will be missing
from the two pieces, as there is with the TV versions.

As a side note, the Columbia House version is also the same two parter that
Paramount will release. Yes, Columbia had the wrong version and it was
corrected. So, the fact that the box says part one and two is correct. If
you have the chopped up version, I suggest calling Columbia and getting
it exchanged.

OK, next; the issue of the order in which they will be released. Sorry to
say this, but they will be released in production number order, not air date,
like TOS was released. But, there is the possibility that they will release
#122 and #123 in reverse order, because of Yar being killed. BTW, 122 was
written with Denise in mind, not just because she liked the script.

I have no idea what the price will be for the tapes or discs. That will be
set when it comes time to get them out. I forgot to ask.

Well, that covers it. That should put this issue to bed.

Oh, the persion I talked to is involved with the Genie network.
