[comp.sys.amiga.hardware] Problems with Spirit INBOARD on A1000: HELP!

rmy@beach.cis.ufl.edu (Rasthiyaadu Yakaa) (02/12/90)

Hi!

I have a problem that I am hoping someone can help me with.

I installed a (new) A1000 Inboard in my A1000, and followed all the
instructions. To be safe, I even grounded the PALs.

The *darn* thing does'nt work. On power up, it seems to go through
the hardware checks OK (blinking leds etc), then prompts for Kickstart.
It seems to load Kickstart for a while (maybe, all of it ?), and then
comes up with a blank screen (not dark) and hangs. There is *NO*
Workbench prompt.

The instructions say that if too many expansion devices are connected,
or a hard drive is connected or other video devices such as frame grabbers
etc are present, then the system will not *LOAD* Workbench. Does this
mean *LOAD* or *PROMPT* Workbench ??? Further, I DO NOT have
any expansion devices other than the 256K front panel and a second floppy.
I even tried without these devices - yet no luck.

Should I follow Spirit's suggested cure -- which is to replace two
PALs on the daughterboard with faster PALs. Anyone done this ??
Anything I should know about this ?? Should I get the PALs from Spirit
or can they be got from any IC place (Radio Shack etc).

Any insight/cure for the problem will be greatly appreciated !!

Thanks

Yaseen

It was suggested to me by several kind people on the
 net that we:
 1) ground our pals
 2) terminate our bus
 3) replace the pals

to overcome similar problems (will not load workbench)
when adding a CMI accelerator to a A1000 with a Starboard.
We first determined that the CMI would run without the
Starboard, we already knew that the Starboard would run
 without the CMI PA.

We first grounded our pals -- did not help.
Then we built a bus termination circuit on a card.
It cost about $40 and fixed the problem. The A1000
now also seems to be resistent to inexplicable lockups
and crashing. I recommend this effort and cost if you
 plan to keep your A1000.
