[comp.sys.amiga.hardware] 5.25" drive problem

ELEGG@latvax8.lat.oz (WHY DONT WE GET TOGETHER SOMETIME) (02/08/90)

HI there !!!!!!
IF THERE ARE ANY AT-DRIVE EXPERTS OUT THERE I NEED HELP !!!
JUST CONNECTED A 5.25" INTERNAL DRIVE (34 PINS + POWER PINS) TO THE EXTERNAL
DISK DRIVE PORT ON THE AMIGA 2000. I HAVE CONFIGURED IT AS DF2: (AS DS1 IN
IBM TALK). THE DRIVE ITSELF IS A CHINON MSJE200A53 TYPE WITH AUTO DISK CHANGE
DETECT (I THINK). THE POWER PINS FROM THE A2000 PORT (PINS 23 AND 12) ARE
NOT USED SINCE I USED THE POWER LEADS ALREADY AVAILABLE FOR 5.25" DRIVES
INSIDE THE A2000.
I'VE GOT ALL PINS WORKED OUT ON THE AT-DRIVE EXCEPT PINS 2 AND 4 WHICH
I HAV'NT CONNECTED . ON THE EXTERNAL DRIVE PORT PINS, I KNOW WHAT THE
DESIGNATIONS ARE BUT I AM UNABLE TO DO ANYTHING WITH PINS 11(DSK CHNG) AND
10(DISK RESET).
EVEN THOUGH I HAV'NT CONNECTED THESE PINS THE DRIVE SHOULD STILL OPERATE
NORMALLY. I GET "DF2:BAD" COMMING UP ON WORKBENCH !! . THE DRIVE SEEMS
TO BE OPERATING NORMALLY (I.E. DRIVE LIGHT COMES ON, HEAD SWEEPS BACK AND
FORTH, MOTOR TURNS E.T.C.) . MY MOUNTLIST IS CONFIGURED FOR DF2: , 0 TO
79 TRACKS AT 11 SECTORS PER TRACK. I CAN EVEN DO AN X-COPY FROM DF0: TO
DF2: !!! . THE DRIVE TYPE CAN GO TO 880K AMIGA FORMAT (MAYBE MORE)
AND 1.4 MEG MSDOS FORMAT.

>>>> CAN ANYONE PLEASE OFFER ANY HINTS ON HOW I MAY GET MY DRIVE WORKING
PROPERLY . I'VE LEFT THE PIN CONNECTIONS BELOW <<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<

My Amiga 500 internal drive died a couple of weeks ago (unfortunately
one month out of warranty, and I'm wondering if there is a relatively
inexpensive way to replace it. My local dealer quotes $185 to install a new
Amiga 500 drive, but I see various ads for drives for less than $100.
The questions I need to have answered are:

   1) What kind of drives available by mail order will fit a 500?

   2) How difficult is it to install an internal disk drive?

Please respond by email, unless you think your answer is of general
interest to Net readers.
