[comp.sys.amiga.hardware] Amiga 500 with 1 Meg on the board

usenet@cps3xx.UUCP (Usenet file owner) (03/01/90)

A friend of mine recently purchased an Amiga 500 on my recommendation.
He is very happy with it.

Another friend was over when the first had it at my house, and mentioned a
message he had seen about there being room for ONE MEG on new 500
motherboards. This machine being new (purchased from Sears, your
"Computer Specialists") we decided to open it up and look.

Sure enough, today's new Amiga 500 has ready-to-go holes for another set
of 256K X 4's!

I want to upgrade my friends machine with the internal sockets. This
allows you to upgrade a 500 to 1 Meg for only $50, REAL reasonable.
Knowing how to do this will make it a LOT easier for me to get people
into 500's. My questions are:

A) Besides soldering (socketing) in the new memory, (80 ns should do)
there is a jumper that needs to be moved. What jumper is it?

B) Is there any jumper that need be switched to make it 1 Meg of chip
ram? The new machine have super agnus.

C) MOST IMPORTANT - certainly, any upgrade must remain compatbile with
expansion cards. I need to know that he can still plug in a 2 Meg
card into the shuttle bay (expansion slot.)

My friend is a perfect example of a 500 owner. He _doesn't_ need a 2000.
He _does_ need a lot of memory (well, if you call 3 Meg a lot)

I'd like it if someone at CBM would spell out what's needed,
since the board is 1 Meg ready straight from Commodore. However, what I
really want is the clear-and-stupid "How To Upgrade the 500 to 1 Meg"
instructions. I don't have an Amiga now, I'm a veteran of Atari 8bit
upgrades where instructions for everything from 256K to 2 Meg Atari
upgrades were everywhere. I'd like the equivalent for this.

Please email your response. If there is enough information and no other
documentation exists, I will do the mod and write a "How-To" and post it
myself.
