[comp.sys.amiga.hardware] A500 backplane sumary

phupp@warwick.ac.uk (S Millington) (03/02/90)

As requested a sumary of responses [sorry it took a while]

No one mailed to say they had actualy built the backplane, unless it fell
into a mail black hole. One person gave up and bought an A2000.

As far as using 74type logic on the board instead of the PALs there is only
the one technical problem - speed, if you can get it going fast enough then
you can use it.
  The advantages/disadvantages are as follows:

 Adv of PALs:
  1) Reduced chip count
  2) If logic messed up, just re-program rather than re-design whole board
  3) Fast
  4) Can be cheaper in volume

 Dis of PALs:
  1) Need special programmers/software
  2) Expensive for hobbyists/diy

With the A1500 out I may just try and afford that - less hassle, no
significant cost difference?
