[comp.sys.amiga.hardware] Converting American Amiga to work in the UK

sattlerc@cell.mot.COM (Chris Sattler) (03/07/90)

I'm being relocated to the United Kingdom for 1 year and I'd like to take
my Amiga 2000 (B2000) with me. My question is what do I have to do to
get it to work over there? I know there has been a lot of talk lately
about the differences between the European and the American versions of
the Amiga, but lately it's been mostly flames. Could anyone summerize
the useful info and mail it to me?

Specific questions I have are:
1) Does the power supply have any internal options to get it to accept
either 120v/60Hz or 240V/50Hz or does Commodore use two different
power supplies in the two models?
2) I have a 1084 monitor. Can I run this on a transformer even if the
computer itself is converted to run on 240V/50Hz or will I have
grounding problems? I have the same problem with my printer.
3) Do I have to replace any of the chips inside to get PAL mode, if I
buy a new monitor over there?
4) Are any dual voltage monitors available which have more features than
the 1084? In other words if I have to buy a new monitor, are there
any available that I could use when I come back to the States, and
do they have any features (eg higher resolution modes) to make their
   cost more attractive?
5) Would I just be better off running everything off of a transformer?
