[comp.sys.amiga.hardware] Rumors of a Super Agnus

xrtnt@amarna.gsfc.nasa.gov (Nigel Tzeng) (03/09/90)

I just read an interesting piece in Amiga Resource (yeah yeah I know...:-))
that sometime when chip prices were high Commandore released Rev 6 500s with
1 meg X 4 chips and a 2Mb Agnus...anybody know of this? I bring this up in
case one or two of you lucky souls out there have a Revision 6 A500.

I purchased my A500 about 6 mos. ago but I was pretty sure it was a real old
model (I picked up a demo model from a dealer that stopped supporting Amigas
for $500...including 1084 and the A501 (I think) upgrade...) so I opened it up
on the off chance it was a Rev 6 A500. Nope...a Rev 5 :-( ...yes yes bitch
and moan.

I was wondering however just what kind of system I bought...Does anyone know
how I can figure out the rough age of my machine? It is a Rev 5 motherboard,
8370 Agnus (Is this the 1K agnus? My Avail says only 512K but I read somewhere
some 500s have the 1k Agnus without the mods necessay to make it use the other
512. Is this true or am I dreaming?) Also how does one identify the A501?
There is a board in there that gives me a system clock and an additional half
meg.

Just in case you all think I'm a total moron because of these questions, my 500
came with no docs at all and I've been learning AmigaDOS and CLI from trial and
error (But I did finally buy a book :-) ) What the hell..it ran Falcon just
fine with me being totally ignorant...

Thanks All,

Nigel

Actually, all Super Agnuses have the ability to access 2 megs of
Chip RAM. Only problem is, the current motherboards don't have enough
address lines connected to the agnus to support 2 megs.
