The most prevalent cause for Janus library not found is poor seating of the Bridge board. Sounds like your cover is putting pressure on the rear section of the case, and in turn causing the Bridge to pull to the rear. Try it without the screw holding the Brige backplate to the case. If it works, you've found the problem. -larry -- Entomology bugs me. +-----------------------------------------------------------------------+ | // Larry Phillips | | \X/ lphillips@lpami.wimsey.bc.ca -or- uunet!van-bc!lpami!lphillips | | COMPUSERVE: 76703,4322 -or- 76703.4322@compuserve.com | +-----------------------------------------------------------------------+

I'm having problems with the A2286. When the A2000 cover is on, the A2286 doesn't work (ie Janus library not found). When it's off, it works. If I pull the cover forward an inch or so the 2286 will work, but any less than that and it doesn't. I've ruled out the possibility of a short or pressure caused by the cover. Could it be RF interference? Any ideas? Chris Conrad cjc105@psuvm (bitnet)

Could it be RF interference? Any ideas? Sounds like it - I have a similar problem with my machine. When I have my hard drive mounted in the upper 3.5" disk bay, it works fine with the lid off, or partially on, but close it up (and of course put all the screws back in, 'cos you think it works) and - DAMM - endless read/write errors... I've fiddled about, and pretty much ruled out any shorts to the case, but it looks like RFI to me. Any help much appreciated. (I've contacted CBM UK about this but they're as good as useless - the tech support dept's info stops at the price list.) -- <><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><> <> Brian Syme <> Why make things difficult, when with just a <> <> bsyme@cs.strath.ac.uk <> little more effort you could make them <> <> <> impossible. <> <><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><>

Mine worked for two days. Then bam! No library found. It worked from the floppy yesterday. Today I got ti to boot and now it can't find aboot.ctrl, so I fixed that (don't know where it went), then it couldn't find autoboot. From the floppy it works but it doesn't recognize the hard drive. This is frustrating. I'll try removing that screw... Greg gsgi@uhura.cc.rochester.edu or gsgi_ltd@uordbv.bitnet

Do you have a Processor Accelerator installed in your 2000 at the time you are having problems with the 2286 board? I had one installed and it really messed up with the Janus Libraries when the Accelerator was in fst mode.

It seems to be working if you take the monitor off of the computer. I'll try this for a while and report what I find. Is this a new problem or have people heard of it before?

Is this a new >problem or have people heard of it before? Well I certainly have, but its not the cause of my hard-drive problem. I had an early 1000 that had occassional r/w errors on its internal floppy when the monitor was on top, but that was probably because it was relatively unshielded. I'd have thought that a dirty great metal case would provide enough shielding. And I'd have thought that the machine was designed with a monitor sitting on top in mind. Anybody else got any ideas? -- <><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><> <> Brian Syme <> Why make things difficult, when with just a <> <> bsyme@cs.strath.ac.uk <> little more effort you could make them <> <> <> impossible. <> <><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><>

The problem with the A2286 seems obvious (IMHO). After ruling out shorts and pressure cause by the A2000 cover the only possibility left is increased internal RF noise when the cover is on. The big question is what can one do to easily solve this noise problem? On another note, there seems to be a bug in the BridgeBoard software (Commodore is aware of this). The problem comes when you try to boot in Color mode from the harddrive. Instead of booting the PC you get a really nasty crash, fireworks and all. The solution is to delete one of the files in the PC/system directory (I forget which one) and let the Bridgeboard software create this file itself. Hope this helps. I am going to take my computer back to the dealer. He said he would call Commodore and see if they have a fix for the A2286/A2000. I'll post the results when I get more info.
