[comp.sys.amiga.hardware] The fate of the A1000

unhd (Paresh S Suthar) (03/28/90)

I currently (I admit it!!!) own an A1000. Well, 1.4 is coming around and
I have heard all of the rumors. I know that there are a lot of us out there.
I don't know what to do... all of my friends (A500 & A2000 owners) keep
telling me to purchase the A2000. I'm not made of money!!!! Even with the
student discount, it is a big drain on my finances. Is there any way to
modify the A1000 internally to make it compatible with upcoming software
and hardware. If so, will it be worth my time and effort to modify instead
of purchasing a new A2000? I love my A1000 now, but if necessary to upgrade
I will consider selling (like everyone is dying to get one).

Any help will be greatly appreciated...

Well, I just traded in my 1000 for a 2000HD but if you can get a student
discount I think it's great. There is a place in Arlington Texas called
Budget Computers. They will buy a stock Amiga with 512k for about $350
which you could then apply to the student purchase. They will also buy
1000 specific peripherals with your 1000. They will buy 2MB StarBoard IIs
for about $225. Note that these are quotes I got over the phone so your
mileage may vary. Their phone number is (817) 792-3508. I do not know if
they will do this by mail though.

Caveat emptor...

I'm in the same situation.

Existing Beta versions of 1.4 will run in an A1000 with autoconfig RAM in
the "first slot" position. If Commodore doesn't continue to support this
configuration, I'll be upset. Given the FUD they've been generating about
1.4 not running on the 1000, though, I shan't be surprised.
