Len Tower's correct about the danger or over-loading USENET/- ARPANET gateways. There are two options to be considered, however, in addition to gating a mailing list to an fa.* newsgroup: (1) First of all, some sites communicate with ARPANET via CSnet. That's how we do it at UNC. We have to pay for this, however, depending on the traffic. CSnet doesn't have anything quite like news yet, so CSnet/USENET sites might not find out about the LIST-OF-LISTS except via USENET's news. I should have mentioned this in the original letter, sorry. (It may be that other networks talk to both ARPA and USENET. Does anyone know about this?) (2) Sometimes there is already a USENET newsgroup which would be appropriate for the mailing list. This happened with net.lang.prolog and the PROLOG-DIGEST. The USENET newsgroup was actually created first, and for a while we were mailing it to ARPANET sites. Now, someone at sri-unix has software which automatically "undigestifies" the mailing list into separate articles for net.lang.prolog. _____________________________________ Bruce Smith, UNC-Chapel Hill decvax!mcnc!unc!bts (USENET) bts.unc@CSnet-Relay (lesser NETworks)

The fa groups which used to come through Berkeley stopped some time ago. I am working on the problem as of a week ago, and hopefully will hack it back into shape in a week or two. I will have to coordinate with Adam (alice!alb) on which groups to gateway, though. There will be a warning/general announcement posted to net.general (and net.announce if Mark thinks it's appropriate) when I have things working again. Erik E.
