[comp.sys.amiga.hardware] Starboard info

Could someone tell me where Starboard II memory
gets configured! I would like to talk to someone
who has managed to load the new kick into Starboard
memory.

Thanks Joanne

Well, Joanne, it rather depends on what you have on the expansion port.
Typically, you'll find the StarBoard configures at $200000, but that may
be different if you have other stuff on the bus.

I've not tried to Kickit (1.4B3) into my SB2 on Amoeba I (my A1000). Perhaps
that's something I can try. 90% of my work is now done on Amoeba II, which
started out as an A2000 (small keycaps) but is now an A2500/030 with 8-Up!
and HardFrame running a Seagate ST138N and a Conner CP3200. Yes, the 3200
works. No, warm boots are a bit of a problem yet. I'm working on that.

Well maybe you can tell me if this is a problem with my Starboard or my
Amiga 1000.

Separately, the A1000 hums along just fine, but I firmly attach my 1-meg
Starboard II (with SCSI card) to the beast and she starts freezing and
rebooting on me after 1-10 minutes. (Once I actually saw her re-boot
while waiting for me to insert a Workbench disk!) Am I in for a visit to
the repair shop? Is it the Starboard, the SCSI adaptor, or the A1000 I
need to have repaired?

The StarBoard II memory is mapped in at $200000 for the lower deck and
$e90000 for the upper deck. This will allow the kick image file to load
into the StarBoard II.	The only thing is, it must be the first device off
of the Amiga 1000 expansion slot.

P.S. This is how it was mapped on my system with a CLtd. HD Controller on
the system too.

The Starboard autoconfigs at the first available memory location
just like any other autoconfig memory device. It should be located at
$200000 on a 1000. Note that to use it to kick 2.0, it *must* be the
first device on the buss. You can't have a hard drive physically located
before it. Put your other expansion peripherals on the outside of your
Starboard.

Oy! Gotta rewind the tape on this one! Ah, well. The A1000 expansion
port is a strange beast. LOTS(!!) of problems started to occur with a number
of systems as soon as you added _anything_ to the port. The most common
problems were caused by two things: weak (low drive current capability) PALs
and/or poor grounding of the PALs on the Amiga. Your shop will know what
I mean.

Commodore changed vendors a couple of times with the PALs. One of these
vendors' chips didn't have the oomph to drive the expansion port properly,
hence there were all kinds of weirdness going on. Since you mention the
fact that it warms up then poops out, I'd suspect that you have one of the
grounding problems (either cold solder joints or inadequate grounding of
the PALs). Once the system warms up, the connections get flakey.

Trying to fix either problem is not for the faint of heart. If you're
qualified to wield a soldering iron and have good intestinal fortitude, you
might have a go at retouching the grounds on the PALs as a first try. I
would __STRONGLY__ suggest that you take your baby to the shop and let them
do it.
