[comp.sys.amiga.hardware] Speed-dependent problem with HardFrame on a 2000/30

hunt@boulder.Colorado.EDU (Lee Cameron Hunt) (07/27/90)

I was wondering if anyone else has experienced this and could perhaps suggest
a fix.

I have a Miniscribe 160Mb SCSI drive (forget the model no.) and have had some
problems with it when using a HardFrame on my Amiga 2000 with an A2630. I
experience read/write errors when writing (using AmigaDOS's Copy and ARP's
Move) large files (approx. > 300Kb) in 68000 mode (this problem persists even
with the A2630 is removed, so I'm convinced its not the culprit). The problem
goes away when I use the drive in 68030 mode, a la my A2630, but I still find
this behavior distressing. (I wonder if the value for MAXTRASFER is set too
high, but I'm just using the HardFrame HD installation program's default value.
And how do you change this value without destroying a partition?)

Currently my harddrive is fried ('cause I was using the 68000 mode and forgot
about the bug). I'm looking for a utility, like DiskDoctor, that can fix
my drive "in situ." DiskSalv can restore most files but chokes on those
bigger than a floppy. I only have 3Mb RAM, so DiskDoctor says I don't have
enough memory. Only about 40Mb disk space is used and I know, using DiskSalv,
roughly where the data is on the disk. I wish there was a utility that would
require salvage RAM space in proportion to the written data size, and not
the partition size (I only have one, all-disk, partition -- foolish, I now
know). It seems that the utility "FixDisk" with the "doom" option would
work, but it's only set-up for drives up to 40Mb.

So, help!

I'd at least like to hear if anyone else has this problem with a HardFrame.

Thanks very much,

If you are using V1.55 of the Hardframe disk, re-run RDPrep and use 130560 for
the max transfer rate. This was an early bug with the symptoms you describe.
