[comp.sys.amiga.hardware] External SCSI HardDrives

adain@watcsc.waterloo.edu (Brent McCrackin) (08/08/90)

As the subject and summary say, I wish to add more hard drive space to
my Amiga system. First, I will describe my current set-up:

	Amiga 500
	GVP Impact 500 SCSI controller
	20Meg Autoboot Hard Drive
2 Meg RAM expansion in controller box (maximum)
SIN 500 2Mb RAM expander INSIDE Amiga (with 1 MB installed)
	A501 512K RAM clock/calendar
2400 baud Cardinal MB2400EX external modem
	Star NX1000 Rainbow colour printer
	1084S stereo colour monitor
	Amiga 1010 external floppy drive

What I'm looking for is to expand my hard drive space without getting rid
of the 20Meg unit currently installed.

The controller has a 25pin D SCSI connector on the back for SCSI units,
and that's where I'd presumably add another hard drive. What are the best
drives available for such a purpose? I'd guess that I would have to get
an external drive of some sort, or have an intended internal set in the open
air (not good).
I've looked at Macintosh SCSI drives with the connector I need, but the
price per megabyte of the drives is too expensive. I would expect to pay
about $400 or less for a 40 Mb Hard drive without controller. I know there
are cheaper drives out there than that, and would like the experienced
ones of you to let me know what's best.

Thanks in advance for your help.
