[comp.sys.amiga.hardware] can I attach 100M HD to A500 ?

PROHVK32@TREARN.BITNET (Cem Turgay) (08/15/90)

Hello,

I knew and I saw that A500 can support from 20 up to 40 MB. HD
so everyone use SCSI interface for this.
But I want to know, 100 MB. (or greater) HD can be used ?
Can I use it with complete 100 MB or partitioned (40 + 30 + 30) ?
Which (or what kind of) interfaces and HDs can I use, how about
their cost in USA. or Europe ?
Thanks in advance.

The Amiga 500 can support the same types of hard disks as any other
Amiga. The reason you see mostly the smaller drives being advertised is that
typically, the Amiga 500 owner is looking to buy an inexpensive drive, and
drives in the 100M to 1G range cost more than 20-40M drives. :-) You can use
a big drive ( up to well over a gig...) as one partition of split it into
several partitions. Whichever best suits your applications.
I don't know about pricing in Europe, but in the US expect to pay
about $150-250 for a HD interface for a 500. Hard disks go for $700 in the
100M range and $4000 in the gig range. Remember to factor in the cost of
an appropriate power supply and case for your hard disk.

Current limit is 2 Gigabytes - that's decent. Partitions are not needed.
You can have it all in one, or as many as you like. Remember that each
partition eats a significant amount of memory for buffers.

>Which (or what kind of) interfaces and HDs can I use,

The A590 is nice and fast, in particular with a Quantum drive. Supra,
GVP, ALF and probably others make nice A500 SCSI drives as well. Some can
be bought in 100M configurations, while in others, (A590 at least), you
take out the old drive and plug in another one. Quantums usually give the
best results.
Several of the controllers have sockets for 2 Megabytes of Fast ram - with
a HD, you'll find yourself burning ram at an incredible rate. My 3M is what
I'd consider minimum for what I'm doing (DTP, programming, networking).

BTW, someone else asked for a SCSI interface for A1000 that'll support
SCSI-direct. The A590 does so, and works on the A1000 (facing the wall :-))

Can't really tell, sorry. Get a magazine like AmigaWorld/AmigaWelt etc.

The German AmigaWelt died in August.
