[comp.sys.amiga.hardware] Request for info: A500 expansion boxes

ken@snowhit.att.com (Ken MacLeod) (08/20/90)

  Background:

  I recently purchased a 500 and I am looking for a 40meg hard disk,
ram expansion and a live/continuous video digitizer (I won't be
getting anything else in the forseeable future and had warm fuzzy
feelings that even the limited expansion possibilities of 500 would
do, so I didn't get a 2000).

I've talked with a few people and my dealer and it seems the only
available continuous digitizer is Live!. (It was mentioned it had
relatively low quality, but I'm not too concerned about that.) Live!
comes in an A500 SOTS model that doesn't have a pass-through, and an
A2000 model with a few more features.

I've heard that only Supra has an A500 HD controller with a
pass-through (for the Live!) but that it doesn't have DMA and I'm
unclear on whether it has RAM expansion, and with the more features
available on the A2000 Live! I'm going to try to avoid that
combination.

So, that leaves me with an A500 bus expander, the A2000 version of
Live! and someone's HD controller. From most sources of info, any GVP
and the Commodore A2091 seem to be the most recommended, and now I'm
particulary leaning towards the GVP Impact A2000-SCSI+8 bundled with
the Quantum 40MB drive.

Main question: I've seen very little discussion on A500 expansion
and have heard rumors that many have problems. I am looking for any
information at all on A500 expansion systems, but I'll be especially
happy to know if they are known to work with Live! and GVP HD
controllers.

Side question, have I missed any good products in my research?

Respond by mail to the address below and I'll summarize the A500
expansion info.

  Thanks!
