[comp.sys.amiga.hardware] A1000 Hard drive problems

sjk@ut-emx.UUCP (bob) (08/24/90)

After over a year and a half, I still do not have a working hard
drive on my 1000. Here's my current list of equipment:

One Toolbox (has worked on my machine with the Flash Card)
One Expansion Tech Flash Card controller (has worked)
One Trump Card (certified by IVS to be working; has never worked
for me though Toolbox people (Expansion tech.) say it should.)
One Quantum 80MB drive (just returned by Quantum after fixing bad
    electronics)

The only system I have had working is the Toolbox, Flash Card, and
drive before it was sent back to Quantum. I tried the drive on a
Trump Card in a friend's 2000, and the drive electronics fried.
IVS says the trump card is fine, and Quantum says they fixed the
drive.

I unpack the new drive, attach it to the Trump Card in the Toolbox
and turn on the system. The drive goes clunk, and nothing else.
Attempts to configure the drive with the Trump low level
formatting software failed as it reported device not connected (for
all devices and drive types tried....) I later find out the
Toolbox fuse blew and the drive was not getting 12V. I replace the
fuse and go back to the at one time working Flash Card. Agian, the
drive goes clunk, and nothing else. Attempts to lowlevel format it
with the Flash Card utilites again fails with a "Format failure"
error. (Thanks guys.) Further efforts with either controller all
fail withthe drive just going clunk.

When the drive was working, it made noises on its own, as it does
its own sort of housecleaning operations. Now, it just clunks when
I turn it on, and not a sound after. I've checked the 50 pin SCSI
connectors (switched 3 of them into the circuit, noting pin 1) and
power from the Toolbox plug (it's there.)

What's going on? Should the drive do more then clunk when it's not
yet formatted,or is this current behavior normal for its state? Is
the drive mechansim locked for shipment or something? If so, how
do I unlock it? Is 18 months long enough to wait for a working
system? (Every component has been replaced at least once.) Yes,
my PALs are grounded. Advice, please?

Can I get my money back and apply it to a 3000?

Thanks,

Scot
