[comp.sys.amiga.hardware] Buying a SCSI controller for my A500; which is "best"?

jkh@meepmeep.pcs.com (Jordan K. Hubbard) (09/06/90)

I've seen several SCSI controllers offered in Amiga World lately in the
range of $140-$250 for the A500. Getting SCSI drives in the 80MB - 151MB
range is fairly easy for me (I wouldn't even know where to find a 40MB drive
these days!) so I'm most interested in a SCSI solution, though I also have
DEC RD53 drive sitting around, which I believe is ST506, so I'm not totally
opposed to going that route either (should one exist). The main thing I'm
looking for is a good price and reasonable (> 500KB/Sec if possible)
performance. I'm also interested in the various enclosure/power supply
options that each controller may or may not have since none of my drives
have power supplies or housings and I'd need to supply those as well.
If the controller has some way of passing through Amiga expansion bus
signals as well, I'll count that as a plus (so I can still use my Amiga
Action Replay!).

Please help this poor fool figure out a low cost hard drive solution
for his A500! I'm tired of swapping disks for Lattice and the 20 odd
utilities I find occasionally useful!

I'll be happy to summarize for the net.

P.S. What's this "Frances" board I keep hearing about? I've just found
a low cost source for 68020/68881 chips (~200DM for the set) and I'm
also interested in a bare-bones daughterboard 68020 upgrade for my A500.

     Thanks!
