[comp.sys.amiga.hardware] Looking for a "boat anchor" portable computer case

blgardne@suns.es.com@bambam.UUCP (Blaine Gardner) (08/29/90)

I'm looking for an old "luggable" style computer case, the kind that
the early Compaq/Osborne/Kaypro portables used. It needs to fit a 9" CRT
and a motherboard that's about 10 x 15 inches. A few years ago this
style of case was advertized a lot in Computer Shopper, but the
lightweight laptops seem to have killed the market for them.

The reason I want one of these antiques is I've got an Amiga 500
motherboard that is just begging to be turned into a Frankenstein
version of a portable Amiga.

Any pointers to a source of these cases, or an old computer with a good
case would be appreciated.

Well, I can't recommend a source, but I will say that the old Compaq XT
portable makes an excellent transportable A500 case. My friend,
John Preston, is the proud father of such a beast which consists of
the base A500, the A501, a CSA Mega Midget Racer 030/882 at 33 MHz,
a 32bit memory board populated with 2 megs of 80ns DRAM, a Maxtor
200 meg HD, and a Kronos 500 controller card. The only negative
thing is the green screen since he hasn't found a nine-inch RGB crt.

A 9" CRT? don't the old portable cases have 5" CRT's?

anyway, If you did mean 9" RGB CRT, then I just wanted to say to go check
out Sony. I believe they make a 9" version of one of their CPD series.
