[comp.sys.amiga.hardware] Rejuvenator

eric@eklektik.UUCP (/dev/tty000) (09/08/90)

Where can I get information on the Rejuvenator? I see it advertized
in Amiga World by a mail order company that claims it provides the
Enhanced Chip Set, Fatter Agnus, 2.0 kickstart ROM, 1MB RAM, and a
battery backed clock, for an Amiga 1000. Is all this true? How well
does it work? How compatible is it with existing expansion hardware?
(I have a 2MB starboard/stardrive.)

Thanks for any info.

To get the best information, call or write the people who actually build
and market the "Rejuvinator"! Here's the information:

       Expert Services
       5912 Centennial Circle
       Florence, Kentucky
       41041
       Phone: (606) 371-9690

They can probably answer your questions about the "Rejuvinator" and if
you have any in depth technical questions about the board they will be
 the best source of information.

I've read about it too, including an intervue with the guy who
designed it (sorry, I can't remember his name at the moment). It's
said to word a-ok with practically all A1000 periphs, to the point
that the designer said that he had the option of adding the gary
chip (that the A500 has) to the board to control timing, but he didn't
because he wanted to maintain A1000 timing as precise as possible
for it to work ok with Lucas&Frances. He said that it also works
ok with the flicker fixer (when you install it in it's video slot).

Now for my question: does anybody know of an A1000 periph that
can accept memory AND hard drive? Something like the partnerJr that
appeared (and disapeared) some time ago; or does anybody have a setup
with 8 megs (or the capacity for them) and hard drive together?

And for the BIG question (that NOBODY has answered): Does anybody
have an A1000 with max memory (8 megs or more), hard drive, accelerator
AND rejuvenator? If somebody out there does, can you post your setup?
Please? Pretty please with suger on top?? :)

Well, enough rambling.... cu@the.mouse

Do it right. There are a couple of expansion boxes that accept a pair
of Zorro II cards. Buy one of those, then add a memory card and hard
disk card. Viola, everything you asked for. That's a much more stable
configuration than two SOTS cards.

Be careful here, though. A bought a Toolbox a year and a half ago
from my 1000 in hopes of just adding a hard drive. I still do not
have a working system. These expansion boxes are just not very
stable or compatible. I've had controllers that both the
controller and Toolbox manufacturers insist will work in the
Toolbox not work. And I have grounded my PALS. I'd stay away from
these boxes if I had it to do over again. The idea is much
better, but the reality is that these boxes (or at least the two
I've tried) just do not work. If you must buy one, buy the entire
setup from one dealer and try it out all together before you buy it.
If you can't try it out in person, make sure they will help you
(refund?) if it doesn't work as advertised. Based on my
experiences, I'd get this in writing.

Good luck.

I saw one of those expansion boxes (open) at an AmiExpo last March. It
literally just passed the bus signals to the 2 or 3 slots that it had -
no buffering, no nothing. It's identical - perhaps worse, actually -
than two SOTS cards! A chat with Bill Seymore (hardware guru...hope I
got the spelling right) confirmed that **there is no ZorroII expansion
backplane available for the 500/1000**. Buyer beware.

Well, you did ask. Following describes an A1000 circa August 1985. The
"figlist", "cpu", "avail" and "info" programs are my own creations 'cause I
prefer their output formats; they're on many BBS systems. The "accelerator"
is the Ronin 020/881 with 4MB RAM, the other two 2MB RAM boxes are Comspec
AX2000 units, and the HD interface is a Supra 4x4. The Genlock is the A1300
(S/N either 025 or 075 (cannot read it well in the dark) from 1st production
run). The rejuvenator is from The Grapevine Group and is sitting on my desk
since I've been trying it in some other A1000 systems, but it DOES work in
this system (and the others in which I've tried it).

I haven't looked at any of these, but I sort of figured there might be
some cheapness in the logic going on. Which really is a shame; we're only
talking about $10-$15 parts cost for a full, 100% compatible Zorro II
backplane; any design has to pay for circuit board, connectors, power
supply, case, etc.

One of these days I should really design a 2 or 3 slot circuit that's proper
and write it up as an article or something. I don't have the time, but it
seems that no one's willing to take our 5 slot example as a starting point for
these smaller boxes. An A500 isn't really much different than an A2000 plus
an expansion box; I designed the A2000(b) by taking the A500 schematics at the
time and adding extra logic (which became the original thin Buster) to perform
the expansion bus functions.

>A chat with Bill Seymore (hardware guru...hope I got the spelling right)

Bill definitely seems to know his stuff. He's a guy to be trusted.

>confirmed that **there is no ZorroII expansion backplane available for the
>500/1000**. Buyer beware.

I don't personally know of any still in production that are full Zorro II
compatible, or even close (there are a small number of Zorro II features
which you don't have to implement in a backplane to be 100% compatible
with what exists today, since a few Zorro II features weren't fully
supported by the OS). If anyone making such boxes think they have one, I
would be more than willing to look over the design and give it my personal
Okey Dokey (I can't speak for Commodore itself of course) if it looks OK;
we could certainly use such a box to help eliminate some of this multiple
SOTS nonsense going on in the A500 market.

The Starboard II will handle 2MB and has an optional SCSI interface.
