I run my Quantums continuously, both at home on the 3000 and at work on
SPARCstations. The ones at home have been continuously powered on since mid
May, and the ones at work have been continuously powered on since about mid
'89.

I have run a Maxtor, several Fujis, Micropolis, Seagate for extended periods,
with only occasional problems, usually fixable.

Disks are like that. Sooner or later all hard drives will fail in one way or
another. When it happens is a matter of statistical probability, the way the
drive is treated, and the quality _of the individual components_ in each drive.

Good Things To Check: airflow and cooling, real reason for the problems
(possibly errant programs, spurious resets, etc.), power supply voltages.

Any netters out there have data about the reliability of Quantum hard
drives? I remember somebody recently posted an article about the integrity
of the disk surface of drives made by various manufacturers. I think the
poster said that the Quantum drive tested was average, but not exceptionally
clean after extended use for some period.

I'm concerned about this because my Q40S started acting flaky this week (1
year + 3 weeks after purchase)! If I leave my A2000b powered up for too
long (>10 hrs), I'm bound to get a read/write error. This worries me
because I have an A3000/25-50 on order, and I'm afraid that within a year (I
expect to be using it constantly), I will need a new HD! If Quantum drives
aren't meant to be used for extended periods of time (days or weeks without
power down), then I'd rather sell the Q50S while it's new and get something
more durable.

If you have real info about the reliability of various HDs, please post! If
you want to offer an opinion, please send me mail.

Thanks for all info/opinions/experiences!

[stuff deleted about 40Q probs]

I've been running a Quantum 105Q 24 hours a day for about nine months
now with no problems. I've also had 80S's and 40Q's running in various
Amigas for almost two years with no ill effects.

In my experience, Quantum drives are very reliable. I have seen a few bad
ones come out of the box, but VERY few failures.
