[comp.sys.amiga.hardware] Clock problem

S.J.Raybould@fulcrum.bt.co.uk (Simon Raybould) (09/25/90)

I posted a request for help because my system clock had stopped and received
NO replies.

Thanks Folks !!!

Anyway it looks as though one of my 8520s is up the spout, if I swap them
round, the clock works but the mouse occasionally freezes. I cannot be
sure which of the two is damaged and I cannot be sure that they are not both
damaged. From the schematics, they are both very closely interconnected and
so may both have suffered some dammage. I will therefore replace them both.

If anyone can suggest a comprehensive test for these chips out of the amiga
a may try that on the old ones before throwing them out. If one still works,
I could then keep it as a spare.

Any response, any at all, would be appreciated.

Now, now, let's not pout and go into a snit just because you didn't get the
free help we've all come to expect from this fine net. Why, after all,
the question I'm about to repost never received any replies so far either
but do you see me complaining about it? No, 'cause I'm here in Denver and
you're in another country...

I have a remotely similar problem with the 8520s on a used A-500 motherboard
I bought. A brief (this time) recap of the story - I got the board in the
mail, tested it, no go (nothing at all on the screen, 10 short blinks and
one long blink then repeat on the power light of a keyboard connected to it).
I swapped out most of the chips and they all worked - then I swapped the
8520s and got it to boot and operate normally. I then installed the A501
clone from my main machine, and it returned to it's previous behavior and
stayed that way when I removed the A501 which is still working fine in my
main machine.

Obviously (?), both 8520s are now bad and need replacement. But is this
symptomatic of a deeper problem on the board? At $15 a pop I don't want
to feed what could be a CIA-eater... (so to speak) If you missed my earlier
ramblings I plan to eventually build a multiplatform portable out of this -
A-Max, PowerPC and Minix (or maybe Unix) as well as AmigaDOS. IF I can find
a 5"-7" color RGB analog monitor (preferably multiscan), that is!

BTW, I just saw an article the other day that said that (I believe) NEC had
been selling bogus clock chips for the past couple of years and were now being
sued over that. I don't remember seeing a part number, so can anyone comment
on whether it affects the Amiga?
