[comp.sys.amiga.hardware] A1000 & Kickstart ROMs

k38335p@taltta.hut.fi (Pasi Pirkka Palom{ki) (10/04/90)

I have tried in vain to get my Amiga 1000 to use Kickstart 1.3 Eproms.
Inside an Amiga 1000 there are four empty IC sockets where you can put 27512
eproms and supposingly you could program Kickstart on four 27512's and with
a proper address decoding A1000 should be able to use the EPROMs instead
of loading Kickstart from the disk.
Although I thought it would be that easy, I encounterd a great problem,
the Amiga wouldn't boot.
Has anybody tried the same, and is there a way to get it working ?
Please send me mail and I'll summarize the answers if anybody else is interes-
ted. Any kind of help is appriciated !

On a related note, I have a friend that removed his daughter board,
(he is already running the kickstart eliminator). To do this he said
he used the ORGINAL pals from before the eliminator. This has quieted
his machine down enough that he can now get his Lucas to run. He is
still trying to get the Lucas and his insider to co-exist. Each will
work with out the other, but when both are installed the first access
to the insider locks things up or gurus (I don't remember which).

I hope Dave or someone else comments on your "unsupported" mod to the
A1000, as I am interested also in putting 1.3/2.0 proms in my A1000.
E-mail to Dave has met with silence on this subject, but then it is a
machine no one uses - right!

The onboard 28-pin sockets can only support up to 256K worth of kickstart. To
get 2.0 rom, you'll need to make you own decoding logics.

                     ------- <- where can I get hold of those ? Doesn't he
need to solder the buffer chips back on the
                                 mother board too...

Dave might be busy... I just got an email reply from him on similar topics.
That took quite a while to get back. Well can't expect too much from someone
that work all day and go home spend his spare time answering questions related
to work... Can't really name someone else other than the CATS people as
delicated... He must LOVE his work. (Should ask for overtime for this :) or may
be C= should hire someone to answer questions on the network full time !!

May be to most others. Coming soon -- the 512K daughter board hack !! Have to
wait until 2.0 official release to test it out and also some legal problems...
Technically, it is very feasible to be able to load in 512K kickstart code from
disk - the hardware hack is here and so is the new boot rom. All I need is time
to test it out, doc it and work with C= for license/legal stuff. (Yeap if I
can find in in my schedule between school, work and social life... Until 2.0
officially come out, I'll wait and see.)

I don't remember all the details, but the guy who did the Rejuvinator
had a Kickstart ROM board for the A1000. It uses the standard 1.3
Kickstart ROM. The Kickstart daughter board is removed, and the ROM
board is plugged into the boot ROM sockets.

Anyway, he brought out the extra address line (A19?) to a pad. He
mentioned in the documentaion that this *would* be used when the 2.0
ROM's came out. I don't know how good he prophecy was, but this would
seem to be a logical path to persue.

The board was about US$20.00, and worked fine.
