[comp.sys.amiga.hardware] Don't Panic

will@waf2000.UUCP (Will Fiveash) (10/10/90)

The other day I was doing some file accessing on my hard-disk when the
very scary read/write error requestor started popping up with alarming
frequency. After chewing my fingernails off, I tried something more
useful which was to turn off my computer and carefully reseat all the
connections between my Amiga and my drive (externally mounted). This
solved my problem. Of course this is no substitute for frequent backups
but it does show that the simple fixes should be the first to try.

Pick up an extremely useful program called "Doctor Ami". It's a full
memory and disk drive test and recovery system. What the disk part does
is do a high-level non-destructive format of your hard drive, marking
off bad sectors. THey have had programs like this on the PC for years
(like Spinrite) but now we have the same for the Amiga - with a memory
tester too! Btw, it's a commercial program.
