I have recently added a second drive to my 2091 system. I carefully followed all the advice given here about making sure the drives were marked as not supporting reselection, to work around a bug that would be fixed "in a free ROM upgrade." I managed to crash my machine by dowloading to disk as I was compiling on the other drive. It appears the reselection workaround didn't work. So I called my dealer, who informed me that the 2091 roms have been around for quite a while, but that it isn't being treated as a warranty repair, and the cost would be around $60. Hmmm. Has ANYONE out there recieved this ROM upgrade? Did it work wonders for disk performance? (Reselection is KEY to decent HD performance with multiple drives) How much did it cost? Does anyone from CBM care to comment? (My machine is March vintage 2500/30...) How could they get away with charging for this thing while it's under warranty? thanks, and sorry for whining... dylan -- dylan mcnamee "...I put the Mu in Mother Goose, dylan@cs.washington.edu the Doc in Doctor Seuss..." I too am interested in the real scoop. From the answeres I get there is NO problem of multiple SCSI drives hooked to a 2091 controller. But I keep seeing users saying they can't get things to work propperly. I am one of these people. When you hear exactly conflicting answeres you don't know what to think. Just want to know the truth here! Dennis Anderson

I can't see how they could get away with it... Your machine is
under warranty. If there's a set or updated ROMs available, you should
be able to get them for free. but then, I don't work for either a
dealer or Commodore... :-)

Ok, here's the situation. The latest ROMs are the 6.1 revisions. These ROMs support two drives. If you don't have the 6.1 ROMs, then go to your dealer and demand to see the April-May 90 tech notes. Find the second article about the ROMs. It tells about a free in-warranty upgrade because there is a problem with the Western Digital Controller chip which doesn't work with two drives without the upgraded ROM. -- John M. I had my system in the shop for some other service, and had them replace the ROMs at the same time. Don't know why you don't have them yet. I was charged some $20 for them, though. Also, I'm just a tad unsure that 6.1 is the latest revision as stated by Mr. Adams. A while back I was talking about this with someone in email who said it wasn't, and that the latest wasn't available when I had the upgrade done. Sorry, I can't remember anything else. I also have only one drive connected at this time, so I haven't encountered any of the problems. :-\ > Gregory R. I apologize if this has been a known fix. However, my dealer knew nothing about ROM upgrades between July and last month. I checked several others in the area and they didn't know anything about it during that time either. I also called Commodore last month to asked them about a "known fix" for the bug. The nice lady stated that a Tech Note had JUST gone out about it and dealers should be getting the new ROMs Real Soon Now. That was in September. So, count yourself lucky, you've got a hell of a dealer! My dealer STILL has not seen ANY new ROMS for the A2091 since I bought the damn machine a year ago. Why does the controller chip say "Proto" on my A2091? Is it common industry practice to use prototype parts in production machines? I'm not being snotty, I really don't know if that's common. Seeing "Proto" on the Western Digital chip certainly IS disconcerting. It makes me wonder if the ROMS contain some horrendous hack around a problem with pre-production hardware. Anyone know if this is the case and, if so, if it impacts performance? Again, I apologize if this is old news, I've been monitoring the newsgroup all along and not seen much discussion of whole A2091 affair. I hope I've not missed something. -- Gregory R.
