[comp.sys.amiga.hardware] Two A590's on an A500. Is it possible ?????

martijn@dnlunx.pttrnl.nl (Reinalda M.) (11/09/90)

I was wondering if it is possible to connect TWO A590's to an Amiga 500.

What would be their device number (DH0 and DH1 ???)

Is the Amiga's power supply capable of feeding them both ?

Can the A590 be fed externally ?

And how about RAM ? Does the double 2 MEG RAM add up to a total of 4 MEG ?

Oh, and is it possible to replace the A590's HD with a 40MB HD ?

There, I said it all. Any responses by mail or posting are very welcome
on this subject. Usefull mails will be posted next to this article.

I doubt it. The expansionport ends at the A590. Most likely to prevent
people from carrying out bizarre things like this.

The A590 comes with a separate powersupply. The A500 powersupply is
hardly capable of running an A500, with an A501 and an extra drive.

>Can the A590 be fed externally ?

With what? If power, see above.

I think it would, if you could. Check out the price of a 2MB internal
expansion. That will be cheaper by far.

You can replace the internal if you want - I have an 80MB Seagate SCSI
in mine - or you can connect more SCSI drives to the back.

Connecting 2 A590's to your A500 seems like a strange idea. Whatever
you want to do can, most likely, be done cheaper and easier in another
way.

It will not be necessary to connect two A590 hard disk controllers in the
same machine, because one controller can handle several hard disks.

The A590 normally contains a 20 MB IDE-hard disk but you can replace it
with a higher capasity SCSI disk and/or add external SCSI drives to the
Mac-compatible D25-connector in the back of the A590.

The A590 Has external power supply (with automatic on/off switching when
the A500 is switched on/off). However, if you add an external SCSI drive
you most probably need a separate supply for that drive (of course you
could use a drive that comes with a case and power supply, Macintosh
external hard drives, for example).

Sure it is possible. You just need a 3.5" SCSI drive and a short ribbon
cable with 50-pin connectors.

PS.
If you connect two or more SCSI devices to the A590 it is best to
use HdToolBox to set 'Reselection' to 'No' for each device (on the
'define drive type'-screen).

The A590 has its own power supply, but has no "bus pass through", so
there is no way to connect 2 to an Amiga500.
You can connect multiple SCSI drives externally to the A590 or replace
Its internal XT-IDE drive with a 3.5" SCSI drive, of any size available.
The device name can be changed with the HDToolBox software.
This piece of software is excellent. You don't need to fool with
mountlists since the software is smart enough to ask the drive its size
and develop its own parameters for number of heads, cylinders, etc.
It is extremely easy to use.

Thanks y'all. Last question : When the A590 is added to the A500, is it
still possible to add a ram expansion to build the full 8 Meg ??
