[comp.sys.amiga.hardware] 1084 Blanking Problem

kyp@stsci.EDU (Mark Kyprianou) (11/26/90)

PROBLEM:
I have a 1.5 year old 1084 monitor that has a blanking problem. It always
popped, but recently it developed the blanking problem. When my monitor
blanks out, it stays blank. Sometimes I can get it to recover by tapping
the side of the monitor. Othertimes, I have to turn it off for a couple
of hours.

THINGS I HAVE TRIED:
I tried cleaning it, but it was not very dusty because I keep it covered.
What area should I concentrate on cleaning?

I opened it up and looked for cold solder joints. I found one potential bad
solder joint, but it did not fix the problem. There is a large PC board on
the bottom that is covered by a shield plate. I have not removed this plate
to look for bad solder joints or dust. Anyone ever hear of this shield plate
shorting out the monitor, there is not much clearance between the PC board,
the ?plastic insulator? and the shield plate.

SPECULATION:
Is there a design flaw in the monitor?

Any info would be greatly appreciated.

I have had the same exact problem on my 1084. I took it into a service
center and got it fixed for about $75. The maintenance guy said that some
whatsit inside the monitor had burnt out. Don't know if this will help any
Workmanship was never a Commodore forte!

I had the same problem with my 1084, and that plate you didn't remove is indeed the problem, to need to remove it and check for broken soder joints, I had the exact same problem, and my local Amiga dealer told me he couldn't fix it, and wanted to charge me for a new motherboard for the monitor, I screwed him and told my problem to my friend, we took the monitor apart, and removed the shield, and re-soldered a few spots, and voila! good as new, the only hard part was removing the sield, and then re-solderin

g back in place... I let my problem for for a much longer period of time and it gets exponenially worse... for a while I stuck a few bad disks between the bottom of the monitor and the metal shield but, that only worked for a bit... hope this helps....

-Mac, and Ibm? No, no, really... they sell those?
