If there are indeed large clouds of Hydrogen in intergalactic space, then the collision of these with a galaxy should start a period of rapid star formation. This could be the explanation for a few galaxies that seem to have recently formed large numbers of stars. Idea triggered by information in "Why Do Galaxies Exist", pp978-980, Science 5/24/85.
