[comp.sys.amiga.hardware] Monitors for the A3000

zama@ellis.uchicago.edu (iftikhar uz zaman) (11/26/90)

[Warning: I am a hardware-illiterate Amiga-novice...I *would*
appreciate knowledgeable answer phrased in a way a dummy could
understand it...Thanks...]

I am on the verge of buying an A3000 to take with me to Pakistan.
I cannot afford a two-page multisync...but: there is a two-page

Hitachi Type HM-1719B-6 nineteen inch analog RGB computer being
offered to me at a *very* reasonable price. The phosophor on the
CRT is of the long-persistence type. And I am told that you have
to look to see the flicker in interlace mode (current user is
using it with an A1000).

My work is limited to text editing and desktop publishing
applications.

1) Will this thing *work* with an A3000? (Probably, yes, right?)

2) I know I will be losing something in going the "cheapo" way--
but I am saving over a thousand dollars...*What* will I be giving
up when I take this instead of a multisync? Especially in view of
the type of work I plan to use this for (desktop publishing, text
editing)...[I have heard people mutter things about special
"productivity modes"--what exactly does this translate to; and
is it the case that I won't be able to benefit from these?]

ANY help greatly appreciated...

Thanks a whole lot...

Iftikhar

If it works with an Amiga 1000, it'll work with the 3000.

You'll lose because of the flicker. If this monitor isn't
a multisync capable of running at a horizontal sync frequency of
31.5 KHz (Speed of most VGA monitors) the display will be the same
as it is on his 1000... ie., you can *hardly* see the flicker, as
opposed to there is *no* flicker. Note that any of these monitors
will still only display the standard 640x400 screen (Maybe as much
as 720x480 via overscan). For a full two page display, you need a
monitor like the A2024 from Commodore or the Moniterm monitor.

You might want to look seriously at a VGA monitor. It will not
be as large as the 19" one you're looking at, but it will give you a
true flicker free display at the 640x400 resolution. Or for a bit more
money, try for the 2024 from Commodore. That give you a full 1008x800
monochrome display, perfect for desktop publishing.

Hi,

What would the best monitors be (for an A3000) in the following
two categories?

         Hi-res monochrome,
         Hi-res colour?

It seems that for hi-res monochrome work, the A2024 is the monitor of
choice, or am I misinterpreting something? Would someone please post
(or point to) the specs on the A2024? (ie. screen size, dot pitch, max
resolution, scan rate range, etc)

After hearing scary reports re the A1950, what would the best choice be
for a colour multisync monitor for tha A3000?

Of course opinions vary, and applications dictate different equipment,
so please post your comments/opinions/data.
