[comp.sys.amiga.hardware] SupraRam 2MB

may@ug.cs.dal.ca (Bear) (12/20/90)

I am interested in finding out some information on memory boards for
the amiga 500. I have recently just receive my SECOND supra500 2MB board
from creative computing. The first one I installed in the scsi interface (also
made by supra) I receive a number of BIT BAD errors with hex addresses. I sent
this board back to creative computing and they in turn send me a NEW board
that was suppose to be error free. Again I ran the supraRamTest program that
comes with the 2MB board and again I obtained errors, about 1/6 of the
board was bad the rest checked out fine.
I have booted my amiga500 and it recognizes all the memory as being
avaiable, 2MB board and 512K 501.
Sometimes when booting I get Guru errors, sometimes everything works
find sometimes I spend 10 min screaming.......

My system config:
	Amiga 500
Supra Scsi Interface (with the new 2MB board installed)
	ST 277N HD (Seagate)
and other wonderful things.

My Questions:
	1. Is this normal for memory to have corrupted areas?
	2. Do I have to have a Supra HD to run the supra memory....
( I ran a +5v power to the board from the Harddrive just like
	     the manual stated.)
	3. Will I suffer from ALOT of ill effects for having corrupted
	   memory bits.

Please reply if you have expirenece with this sort of work AND could others
with supra 2MB boards tell me their expiriences with this product.

Sounds like it may be your Supra interface and not the memory board.
Whenever you see two different boards with the same problem, look to the
common denominator. I know Supra went through a couple of different SCSI
board designs on the 500 before making the step to the current XP design,
and it may be that older ones have more troubles with expansion memory then
the newer ones. I'd call Supra's technical support number and talk to them
before proceeding further.
(BTW, their number for tech support is (503) 967-9081, 8-4 PST)

What the Amiga thinks is there, and what is actually there and working
can be two completely different things. The Amiga assumes that what the
autoconfig logic says is correct. This is normal, even when the memory is
not working, unless the portion of the memory that's broken is in the first
eight bytes...

:My Questions:
:	1. Is this normal for memory to have corrupted areas?

	No.

You should be able to work just fine as long as you're providing
the +5V yourself. I believe on the newest designs, Supra uses the power
from the Amiga's bus for the memory board. Possible now that memory uses
less power and fewer chips do the same job as before.

:	3. Will I suffer from ALOT of ill effects for having corrupted
: memory bits.

Yes. If the memory isn't working right, you'll tend to crash a
lot. Get it fixed.
