[comp.sys.amiga.hardware] A2000 gremlins

Hello,
Two friends of mine have been having different problems with their
Amigae 2000 for a while now, and I am wondering if any net.wisdom or
net.experience might make troubleshooting these problems easier.

1) Amiga #1 has the old "keyboard sucking the first keystroke" problem.
I wouldn't waste the bandwidth of the net if not for the following
notes: He has a Rev 4.5 motherboard that ALREADY has those two
capacitors removed, from the factory. Second, the keyboard type is HyTek.
I know I had to remove the capacitors on MY system to solve the problem,
but on HIS, it's already been done. The final kicker, the owner of the
machine says it's only a recent development. His keyboard works fine
on MY machine and MY keyboard works fine on his machine.....

2) Amiga #2 has an intermittent problem where his mouse stops working
in the horizontal plane (vertical is fine). Currently, the problem is
not intermittent (it's permanent now). We put the mouse in the second
port, and I wrote a program to swap ports, and the mouse worked fine! (That's
how he's using the machine now.) The machine has been to two different
dealers for repairs several times. Each time, the machine works for a while
and then dies. We even changed the 74LS157 (or 257) that swaps the mouse
port (funny thing, it was socketed, as if the dealer thought of it too :-)
and that did no good. The dealers have swapped out 8520's Angus', and
I swapped out the chip (Denise or Paula, I forget) that gets the output
of the LS multiplexer.... There is probably a heating effect going on
since this machine is used for a BBS, and it takes a few weeks after being
fixed (and left cold) before it starts to freak out.....

Sorry for the length of the post, but if anyone has experienced similar
problems and discovered solutions, I (we) would be grateful.

   Thanks
     Paul Gosselin
