[comp.sys.amiga.hardware] Mini-Scribe HD & SCSI.. Compatible?

Lynlee@cup.portal.com (Linda Stefny Munson) (01/06/91)

Hello..

There is an old (1987) Mini-Scribe, Model # 8438, gathering dust.. I have
an SCSI HardFrame Controller and no HD to use it with.. Will the above
HD work with it?? It is a 20 meg.. I am using a Ami 2000 with Fat Angus,
8Ups! with 2 megs fast ram.. and a 68010 chip.. Just in case that info
is significant.. Im fairly new to the Amiga world.. Any help will be
greatly appreciated! :)

Actually, that Miniscribe HD model 8438 is qualified for RLL and its interface
is "ST506/4512". What this means is that it's a 30MB drive when operated RLL.

To make it function with SCSI on the Amiga simply requires bolting an
Adaptec 4070 "SCSI <=> 2,7RLL" translator to the back of the drive (4 screw
holes), formatting, and you're up and running!

Feel welcome to send email if you need more info. If you're in Silicon Valley
(hard to tell, since 95% of PORTAL's subscribers are NOT in California), feel
welcome to attend the FAUG meeting in Palo Alto this Tuesday during which I
"do" the technical Q&A session (along with Dancing Bears and Stoopid Computer
Tricks! :-)

Lynlee@cup.portal.com (Linda Stefny Munson) in <37613@cup.portal.com> asked
about the Miniscribe 8438, and my answer included the text "...ST506/4512."

Arrgh. Itchy finger on ^D. Substitute "ST506/412" for "ST506/4512".

For this drive, a better choice is the Scientific MicroSystems OMTI
3527 card. It's in a 3.5 inch form factor... I believe the 8438/8425 drives
were 3.5 inch also. The 3527 is an RLL ST-506 to SCSI convertor, and does a
much nicer job than the Adaptec does. :-)
