[comp.sys.amiga.hardware] Keyboards? A500 replacements?, 2 on one machione?

yorkw@stable.ecn.purdue.edu (Willis F York) (01/19/91)

Well I've been looking around and i've noticed that several
"dumb" terminals around here have keyboards with

"coaxial" (Well it looks like Coax) or "phone" line hook ups to
the rest of the terminial...

What's the "poop" on using other keyboards ect... with a 500 or 2000?

how about an "adaptor" thet fits in teh 500 to the cable connecting
the keyboard and being able to hook up a "diffrent" keyboard?

The ones on the WYSSYE terminial have about 16 function keys.
and is about 4 in narrower then the 500 keyboard,

Can it be done?
.

On the subject of Keyboards for the A500 again....

What does the cable inside the A500 look like (I don't feel like tearing my
Ami apart looking for this thing before I get the proper cables to extend
the reach from non-existante to about5-10 feet on my 500... what will I need
and can any monkey with a soldering iron (me) do it without disttoying the
machine, myself/and or roomate in the process?

Well the "cable" is about 6 little wires (More? Less?) that are
Firmly into the keyboard part, but "snap" on to 6 little pins on the
mother board, It seems it'd be easy to make an extender.
But then ya'd have a Hole in ya 500...

oh. there's a "thick" ground cable bolted from thekeyboard to the
disk drive. (ANit-static?, or just a Ground? May be important...)

Are these "six little pins" simialr to the average phone line? And also
when the keyboard is removed, does it stay together, or does it need something to hold it togther? And does anyone know what the "maybe important" ground
wire does?
TIA (thanks in Advance)

Well the Wires are "thicker" than what'd be used in the "Phone" wire.
(Just a little thinner then a Pencil lead)

My keyboard stays together, my friend has a 500 that's keyboard is a
LOT diffrent, it's got a "Plastic" sheet on the bottom, apparently
to cover a lit of wires he's got on his keyboard..

Mines a 1 Pice..

How about a "Cable/Hack" to allow one to remove the Internal drive and
set it in a Good place.

Then i could some NORMAL computer desks..

If I remember right (its been a couple months since I last opened my
500) this conector is on the end that attatches to the motherboard. It
pushes down on some pins on the board. It is easy to take off and put back on.
It isnt like a phone jack, though. How the ribbon cable that runs from the
connector is attatched to the keyboard I can't remember. I don't think that
it would be to hard to cut this cable, hook the female part of a keyboard
connector to the end running to the motherboard, and hook the male part of
the connector to the part running from the motherboard (with a long cable, of
course). Don't worry about opening the machine to take a look for yourself.
You only need to flip the machine upside down, remove about five torx screws,
flip it back over, and remove the top. It would only take you a couple of
minutes.
I have been thinking of doing this myself. If anyone knows where i can
get the the case to a 2000 keyboard or has one they'd like to sell, let me
know.

What about the "ground" wire that the keyboard has attached to it... any
ideas what to do with it?
