[comp.sys.amiga.hardware] GVP II & Adaptec ACB 5500 problems

oakley@cgowgs.dec.com (Fixed in Previous Release...) (01/23/91)

I am attempting to connect an Adaptec ACB 5500 SCSI to ST-506
adaptor to a GVP Series II Controller.

The ACB 5500 has only one jumper installed to address it at
SCSI ID 2. There is a 10mb st-506 drive connected to the Drive 0 connector
addressed to DS0.

When using the GVP FastPrep program in Manual, I select SCSI ID 2
and cycle through LUN's 0-7. The program indicates no drive for each lun.

In reviewing the manual it would appear that the ABC 5500 will
return an error status if the drive does not have any low level formatting
(which this does not), however if this is the case the GVP FastPrep must be
interpreting the code as no drive.

On power-up the ACB does step the ST-506 looking for setup
information and the GVP does query the ACB 5500 (the device select led on
the board lites, also lites when using FastPrep). So I beleive the board
and drive to be configured properly.

A call to GVP Tech Support was a waste of time. The person I
talked to had no knowledge of the ACB boards but did indicate that their
Software Troubleshooter had tried it once and it worked for him. When I
asked if I could talk to this person I was told that he does not do
Technical Assistance calls. I then asked if this person could perhaps
provide information on what he did and what happened (just to see if I was
on the right path). After another long period on hold I was told to run
the GVPprepscsi program supplying the LUN and SCSI ID and that this would
make a Mountlist file on my M: drive. Upon later trying this program I
found that the program accepts only the Unit number and some text options
(such as OFS, ASKALL...).

All in all a not worth the time and expense. I am beginning to think
that I should have gone with a CLtd or Supra controller because I have read
reports the the format program supplied with those controllers understand
about the ACB boards and just work.

If anybody has had experience with this and made it work could you
please drop me a message to

I should probably leave this up to Phil, but he wrote me a couple
of format/map routines for the ACB-5500. they should work with most scsi
direct implementations... I know they work with the Nexus and Supra at least.
I know of no SCSI interface manufacturers for the Amiga that directly
support the 5500. :-( Even though the 5500 is so much of a nicer controller.
