[comp.sys.amiga.hardware] ADdIDE internal hard drive for A500

dtiberio@csserv1.ic.sunysb.edu (David Tiberio) (02/02/91)

I have waited 8 months for a hard drive, but decided to wait until last
December. Then I discovered the AdIDE controller from a post on the internet.
He said he saw at the Toronto Amiga show, an A500 with the AdSpeed, AdRAM, and
internal hard drive.
I then found it listed in Amazing Computing's Guide to the Amiga, current
issue (around page 306, Last Minute Additions). I also called The Software Shop
(page 103 of Feb 1991 AmigaWorld), whom had been advertising the IDE for a few
months now. I spoke to a man with a foreign accent who told me that a new
power supply is not necessary, and that it is in fact internal. 40 megs for
$460. He had not received them as of Monday, Jan 28th.
Safe Harbor (page 86 Feb 91 AmigaWorld) advertises the IDE controller for
$118, comparable to Software Shop's $119. Safe Harbor did not have the IDE
drive or the controller available.
Briwall (page 82) did not have a conventional ad this month, but over the
phone I was told they have the AdIDE controller and 40 meg drive for $530. The
drive is 3.5 inches, while many IDE drives are smaller (2.5 inches). I was
under the impression that Briwall already has the AdIDE and drive (but alas,
I do not wish to pay more then I have to).
ComputAbility, the largest ICD distributor, was not aware that the IDE
controller existed.
Creative Computers did not carry the AdIDE controller or drives, and nor did Manta.

I called ICD twice in the past few weeks. I was told that the AdIDE
controller would have been shipping as of Monday, Jan 28. I was told that no
external power supply was necessary, and that the 2.5 inch drives fit
internally in the Amiga 500. They plan on marketing the AdIDE with a 20 meg
Connor drive, at approx 500kb/sec transfer speed, for around $620. He said
that the Connor drives would consume very little power, and that I should
be careful when buying an IDE drive. They may not fit inside the A500 or they
may require too much power. He mentioned to make sure that the dealers mention
whether the drive must be placed in the A500 3.5 inch drive bay. He said that
the IDE drives are generally cheaper than SCSI drives. I asked if he could
suggest any other IDE drives such as Maxtor, etc., but he said he could not
suggest any other drive and that I should look for the above stated factors
(low power, small size).

I intend to buy the AdIDE controller as soon as it is available. I plan to
call dealers on Monday, Feb 5 (or whatever day it is).

Good luck in finding a hard drive. :)
And if you have AMAX!, call ICD for info on the driver.
