[comp.sys.amiga.hardware] Questions on the A3000

mohabir@arisia.Xerox.COM (Daniel A. Mohabir) (02/05/91)

I have 2 questions on the Amiga 3000. The computer is a 16 MHz A3000.
Question 1:	I have seen all the discussions concerning disabling
re-selection when using the A2091 on an A2000. Does this also apply to the
A3000 or has the software on the A3000 been fixed to solve this problem? I
will receive my A3000/16-50 in 2 days and I plan on installing a Conner
200 meg drive and a Syquest drive on the computer (the Syquest will be
external). Do I have do disable re-selection?
Question 2:	I know that the A3000 uses SCRAM for fast memory but can you
also use normal page mode dram (ZIPs 256K X 4)? You see, I got 32 of these at
a price that was unbeatable. Also, they are 100ns instead of the specified 80ns.
So, can I use 256K x 4 ZIP page mode DRAM (100ns) in an A3000/16 computer?

Thanks for any information.

It had the same basic problem, though it's easier to solve on the
A3000 (due to a softloaded OS), and it only had the reselection problem I
believe, not the interrupt latency problem. I'm not certain whether the last
released version (2.02) had the fix or not, but the current version
certainly does. If 2.02 doesn't support reselection, selection on the
internal drive should be off already. Check out your A3000 Install disk:
there are scripts that build the default RDB, and one will include a
"reselection off" or some such command in it (it's a script of input for
the prod_prep program).

I don't know about having to disable reselection since I only have one HD,
but the HD I'm using is a Conner CP3200 in my 25Mhz 3000. I also have a SCSI
tape drive, which seems to work.

Yes, you can use page mode ZIPs in the 3000. The performance isn't as good
as SCRAM, but it works just fine.
