[comp.sys.amiga.hardware] IDE Update

dtiberio@csserv2.ic.sunysb.edu (David Tiberio) (02/15/91)

Yesterday, after another round of 800 calls, I learned the following
about the IDE controller:

Two models are avaible from ICD,
AdIDE 40 which works only with the Amiga 2000
AdIDE 44 which works with the Amiga 2000 or Amiga 500
-AdIDE includes a mounting bracket for $20 more than the AdIDE 40
-A500 can have an internal hard drive
-if a 3.5 inch IDE drive is used, the floppy drive must be removed
-if a 2.5 inch IDE drive is used, the floppy drive can stay as it is
should not be more than one inch high, and hopefully 1 watt

 Features of both AdIDE controllers:

   -plugs in to 68000 CPU
-can have accelerators piggy backed onto the AdIDE controller
   -has SCSI pass thru
-on an A500, a SCSI ribbon can be inserted through the left external
bus slot and into the AdIDE SCSI port
-retails at $179, may be found for $120 at dealers

Today, after another bombing run of 800 numbers, I found some more goodies.

Connor CP3044 might work with AdIDE 44 (A500)
Western Digital 93044A might work with AdIDE 44
Quantum model will soon be available (source: ICD salesperson)

40mb IDE drives can be found for as little as $229.

The above three companies were recommended by an ICD salesperson, and
also appeared to follow the 2.5 inch etc. requirements as provided by
numerous dealers. ICD intends to ship a 20mb Connor drive.

Hard drive and controller package can cost as little as $360 for 40mb!!

For more info on the above mentioned IDE drives, call the following...

  1-800-669-5208
  1-800-767-DISC
  1-800-328-3387

These are IBM dealers, and may not be familiar with A500 or AdIDE. Before
purchasing an IDE hard drive for use internally on an A500 (without removing
the floppy), make sure that the IDE drive is very small!! I intend to once
again call ICD and verify the above mentioned hard drives. Good luck, and
let me know when you find one that works!
