[comp.sys.amiga.hardware] Fujitsu "Eagle" SMD HD and Amiga

Scott_Busse@mindlink.UUCP (Scott Busse) (02/19/91)

I'm reposting this, since the original formatting messed it's readability.

Hello World! I'm fishing for a little help configuring a hard drive into my
system.
*
Drive Type - Fujitsu M2351A "Eagle"
Capacity - 474.2 (unformatted)
           - 28.160 K/ track
Disks - 6 x 10.5"
Heads - 20 + 1 servo per drive
           - 2 per surface
Cylinders - 842
Interface - SMD

Interface Type - Adaptec ACB-5580 ( SCSI to SMD converter)
Function - ANSI X3T9.2 SCSI interface to up to 4 SMD type drives

Amiga Controller - A2090a ( ANSI X3T9.2 compatable - page 38 of 2090 manual)
Amiga - 2500/30 (rev.4.4 mother board)

The beast ( >100 lbs!) is all set up to go. The drive is configured to
1127 byte blocks, to match the Adaptec's required minimum 1088 byte actual
size for its maximum 1024 byte size.(overhead!)
I have the monster "customer engineering manual", but unfortunately I
don't have a badblocks list. I believe the badblocks info is in the first
2 tracks of the drive, but I don't know how to get at it, or whether I need
to or not. The drive was previously on a Sun with an SMD controller, and
had a block size of 16Kbytes. The Adaptec required I change that, so I may
have to low level format.(?)
On the software front, I have only the CBM prep program, and a Low Level
format command by ? Don Curtis ( that apparently works with the 2090a.)
I need suggestions on what the best approach is to do this. Preliminary
tests of the Adaptec and of the Fujitsu in their standalone diagnostic modes
indicate that they are working fine. When the drive is on at boot time,
the system will hang and wait until
the drive ready light (essentially the motor speed) is on. At that point, the
Adaptec blinks once, and the Amiga boots as usual. This looks like a good
sign to me. There's some kind of conversation going on there.
The current setup is: 2 ST-506 type drives, ( the Rodime 44 meg, and
a Miniscribe 20 meg) as units 1 and 2 ( as partitions DH0:,DH1:,DH8:(ffs),
and DH9:(ffs).
The tentative setup for the Fujitsu is unit 3, DH2:, DH3:(ffs), and
DH4:(ffs).
Basically, I'm not sure whether to prep or low level format (or go blind :)
at this time. I don't want to do the wrong thing first...

Any help is greatly appreciated! Commodore? Anyone out there tried one of
these babies?
