[comp.sys.amiga.hardware] A500 power supply problems

jms@vanth.UUCP (Jim Shaffer) (02/20/91)

A while ago I posted a message about my A500 locking up frequently when I
tried to use both floppy drives at once, and even just one floppy drive
when it was really warm. I got two general classes of answers -- one said
that it was a bad 8520 chip, the other said it was a bad power supply.
Well, I replaced both 8520 chips and the problem didn't change, so I'm
going to test the power supply theory at the next user group meeting.

In case it IS the power supply, is there any way to repair it or am I stuck
buying a new one? It didn't ALWAYS do it. The problem developed over the
course of about a year (the system is only two years old) and it only got
bad enough (frequent enough) to look into fixing it a few months ago. Or
is the real problem on the motherboard (cooling IT, not the power supply,
helps) and so there's nothing wrong with the power supply, I just need a
bigger one? If this is it, why did it just develop recently, and can it be
fixed?	If it can't be fixed, why didn't Commodore ship their systems with
bigger power supplies in the first place? Should they be required to fix
it?

I find it really strange that I should be having this sort of problem,
because I only have an A501 memory card and one external drive. (It's an
AIR drive -- I can't remember what the company's acronym stands for.)
