I've built the two-port version of the multi-I/O board in the Feb. Amazing computing. When I try to boot with it installed, DF0: runs erraticaly, flashes its LED on and off, double-steps, chatters, etc. In the directions to the board, it says if this happens, I need the A1000 PAL grounding mod. Could someone please mail me the modification? I'd really like to get this sucker up and running... The I/O board is easy to build; the hard part is the carpentry to fit it into your Amiga. The instructions are not too terribly clear on how to fit it in. For the daughterboard containing the Maxim RS-232 interface chips, I found that the holes drilled in it lined up perfectly with the holes in the motherboard for the Disk drive and serial port on the back of the A1000. I used some standoffs and supported the back of the board by glueing some plastic underneath it to insulate it, and allowing it to rest on the small metal RF shield on the motherboard. It's really robust, and allows you to plug cables in and out without breaking anything: View from back of Amiga: Serial daughterboard --[======]--[======]-- | <- standoffs -> | | | --[=====]---[======]---- disk & serial ports on motherboard Thanks in advance... -- ben@epmooch.UUCP ben%servalan.UUCP@uokmax.ecn.uoknor.edu {chinet, uokmax}!servalan!epmooch!ben (Ben Mesander)

Well, it says that grounding your PALs help in general whenever you add anything to your A1000. However to really solve your problem you need to run additional power and ground lines (as described in the manual) to the board. This is should reduce or eliminate the problem. (Grounding PALs will help, to be sure, but it's not the major problem). Now my own question: Is there a CMOS version of the 6526 or 8520 ?? Would it help reduce noise problems? -- Dan Babcock [I don't have the PAL grounding docs handy; hopefully someone out there does!]

The PAL grounding mod was written up in Amazing Computing Vol 3, #3 (1988). I've heard that they later changed the details on which pins to ground. I had another Amiga owner fix the diagram in my magazine with what he remembered, but I haven't attempted the mod, so I don't know if he got it right. Hopefully, this will point someone in the right direction to get the full info. If not, I'll post what I have and hope things work. %% Lloyd Eldred -- Va Tech Amiga Users Group (ARUS) President

The diagrap published in Amazing Computing is *WRONG* The text description of the modification is correct. I believe a corrected diagram was published one or two issues later. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE be sure you you have the correct information before you try to make the mod. Wildstar PS: I own the issues in question (but I am at work now, and can't get at them) and I will look up the information and post it; give me a couple of days.

The article in AC Vol. 3 #3 was correct; it was the DIAGRAM that was wrong. Read the text and you should have no problem! --Rick Wrigley fhwri@conncoll.bitnet ~~~second-hand smoke is THEFT~~~
