I have posted once before on the perils of my annoying A590 Hard drive. Many thanks to those who helped, but after trying most of the suggestions given, it still doesn't work! Here is the current Situation: 1) I tried a number of times to check and update the bad block list, using both Quarterback Tools and HdToolbox. Every time it would get a different number of errors, and would be able to "repair" previously found errors from the last try. 2) Since updating the bad block list didn't get me anywhere, I tried to low-level format the disk with HdToolbox. The last time I tried this, HdToolbox aborted in the middle with a "seek error". From what I know, a seek error would mean there is something wrong with the disk head. Am I correct? 3) Having no time to deal with the problem, I threw Workbench on a floppy and have been working from that (at least I get my 3 mb of ram...). When I boot my system, however, it takes about 5 min. before it even decides to load off the floppy. All the while, the hard disk access light is on, but the hard disk does not seem to be accessing anything (or trying to - Normally I can hear the hard disk read/write head making seek noises). Instead, it just sits there spinning and spinning with the disk access light on. Does anyone know why it does this? 4) When it finally does boot up off the foppy, workbench usually doesn't even assign an icon to the hard disk. Once in a while, it will assign WDH0:NODOS to it and sometimes even 'Workbench'. Why would it not assign an icon at all? If the problems are seek-related, you'd still think that it would come up with the NODOS one. And why does it call the disk WDH0 instead of DH0? Your Comments would be welcome. E-mail responses would be preferred (but I do read the group). Thanks Ken Huisman c315-25@manning.cs.ualberta.ca
