[comp.sys.amiga.hardware] I Need a A500 Hard Drive, Cheap

drewid@chopin.udel.edu (Andrew G. Dehel) (02/27/91)

Hello All. I have posted this to a couple of different groups, because I
feel it is related to a number of groups.

I have been saving my money up for a little while now, and I
have decided to buy a hard drive for my A500. The problem is that I
really don't know how I should go about doing this. There was a pretty
sorry article in Amiga World this month on A500 Hard Drives, but it only
reviewed 4. I have seen lots of people posting about low cost used hard
drives, but most of them are without case, and I get lost as to what I'd
need to get and do with them to get them to work on mine.
Could people who have upgraded their A500's or who know lots
about these subjects mail me about them? I have about $600 to spend,
and I'd like to get at least a 40MB drive that is pretty fast and the
box it goes in, you know, something like the supra 500xp or the Gvp or
whatever. It would be a plus to be able to add memory expansion to the
box, and I'd like to be able to add other drives if the need arose (so a
SCSI port would be a plus, too).
Can I buy a GVP or Supra 500XP without the drive and buy a used
drive and just hook it up? What would be required/involved? Would it
be more or less expensive?
Someone posted somewhere about a jasmine 40MB drive for MAC for
$299, and that would have a warranty, which is good. Could I get one
of these GVP or Supras (or A590?) without drive and a low priced SCSI
for $600? Maybe with some memory, even? I want to do the best job I
can for the least money and the most speed.

Thanks in advance for your time.

Buy a copy of MacWorld, and scan through the ads, I have seen a price of $259
for a Quantum 40 meg drive and that may not be the least expensive souce in
there.
