[comp.sys.amiga.hardware] How to cure ST277N soft errors?

tomb@hplsla.HP.COM (Tom Bruhns) (02/28/91)

I've started getting some (apparently 'soft') errors on one of the partitions
of my ST-277N, interfaced to an A1000 through a Starboard/StarDrive. Before
I go reformatting and/or reinitializing things willy-nilly, does anyone have
any comments on how to get rid of such problems? It seems to be only in one
of the partitions (3-20 meg partitions and one 2.5 meg; the "middle" 20 meg
has the problem). Hitting 'retry' once or twice when the error comes up
seems to solve the problem, and no data appears to be lost. Any thoughts on
what might cause this and what I might try to solve it would be appreciated.

In article <11260001@hplsla.HP.COM>, tomb@hplsla.HP.COM (Tom Bruhns) writes...
   (problems with ST-277N, A1000 and Starboard/Stardrive)

I have a very similar setup. I have an ST-277N-1 with my A1000 and
Starboard/Stardrive. I get the same symptoms too. Every once in a while
I get a read/write error that goes away with a single [retry]. Annoying,
and potentially deadly to my planned BBS on the 1000, but not a real
problem at the moment.
No solutions, just letting you know you're not alone.

Well, I couldn't live with it any longer. Here's what I did (so far):
0. Backed up whole disk ;-)
1. Ran DiskDoctor on two partitions, including the one I was having
problems with. Result: found errors in both; could not validate
the one that was having problems.
2. Tried AmigaDOS formatting each partition. It would try, and get a
couple cylinders into it and give up.
3. Reinit the drive (hard format; low level format). Actually ran the
StarDrive 'find bad sectors' program first, and none were found.
(actually none other than what were already spared out.)
4. Reformat (AmigaDOS) each partition.
5. Restore all the backed up files.

This took some time, but _so_far_ seems to be working. I'll get into some
heavy file access this weekend and find out for sure.
