[comp.sys.amiga.hardware] A2091 questions

jason@cbmami.UUCP (Jason Goldberg) (02/28/91)

     OK,

I have a A2091 with the 'A' version of the WD chip and 5.92 ROMS.
It has two Seagate 157N 46 MEG HardDrives on it. I don't think reselection
is turned off and I have never had a lock-up in two years. Now I am going
to switch to a Quantum 40Pro and 105Pro, instead of the Seagates. I will
probably turn Re-Selection off when I configure these drives. Should I
expect any toubles?

Thanks,

-Jason-

[ I recieved no response to this post last week so I am reposting the hopes
that it was missed by those that could help. Please note that I am in no
way looking for any kind of promise, etc... just some friendly
information.)

What is the latest news on the problems with the A2091 HD controller? I
have the following system:

A2000 rev 4.4 w/ mod for A2630
A2058 2 Megs
A2630 2 Megs
A2320
A2091 WD "A" Chip, 5.92 ROMS
PrinterFace --
extra parallel port from IVS (goes between the 68000 and its socket).
2 Internal floppies
1 A1010 external floppy

There is a Quantum 40 mounted on the card (w/ no terminator pack), and a
Quantum 105 mounted in the 5 1/4" back (w/ a terminator pack). Both drives
have reselection turned off (I changed the Drives defs to "NO", highlighted
the new def, had to re-setup my partitions, and "save changes," for both
drives). I can cause a lockup (only sometimes) by opening two Shells and
doing a "DIR opt A" for each drive at the same time, if they lock-up I can
reboot and everything is OK. This morning I woke up and my drives were
locked-up (I run UUCP at night) and upon rebooting I had a terrifying hour,
before I was finnaly able to get the drives to validate w/o lossing any
data.

I suspect that the problem is somehow related to the speed of the drives.
Until I got these Quantums, I had two Seagate 157N's (one on the card, one
external), and never had a lockup, I didn't even have reselection turned
off! In fact when I switched drives (before I remembered to turn off
reselection) I copied the entire 46 MEGS from the external Seagate to the
Quantum 105 with no problem.

I have access to the 6.1 ROMS for the A2091, should I try theses? Are they
likely to help the problem (I know they will help the zero memory location
problem)? Should I wait for a newer set of ROMS? Should I steal a set of
ROMS from an A3000 (would they work?)?

What is currently being done about this problem. I know that all the
Commodre Engineers are very talanted and very busy. There is no doubt in
my mind that any of you guys could fix this problem if you are assigned to
it. I understand that it is really not you decision what you have to work
on. My questions are?

Is there currently anyone working on it?
Is there any possible fix on the horizon?
Is there anything I can do in the interum?
If nothing is being done, who should I (all A2091 owners) write to in order
to get someone working on this?

Please note, I am not looking for any dates, names, promises, prices,
etc... I would just like to know where (and if) I stand.

Thanks very much,

-Jason-
