[comp.sys.amiga.hardware] A1000 lost memory locations. How to find them?

cs99msm@unccvax.uncc.edu (m. mcknight) (03/20/91)

I just purchased a used Amiga 1000 a few weeks ago. It is in good shape
and was at an excellent price. It came with one megabyte of internal RAM.

Now, here's the problem... The additional 512k of memory is not AUTOCONFIG
and that (as you probably know) means I have to use that wonderful little
ADDMEM program. I ran SI and it reports that my base 512k of chip RAM is
located at something like 000008E8 - 0007E7FF. When I use the ADDMEM
program I use the command "ADDMEM 0007E800 000FB800" and I get the message
"512000 bytes added to memory" (or something like that). BUT, the first
task I run crashes. For example, I can run a couple of CLI windows and try
to run SI in one of them and it will report a SOFTWARE FAILURE but it won't
GURU. In the other CLI window I can run A10 TANK KILLER and it loads up and
runs fine. It will GURU upon exit though. If I add the ADDMEM to my
startup-sequence it gives GURU's. If I add the ADDMEM to the A10 TANK KILLER
startup it GURU's and wont load the game. Even if I add the memory in a CLI
window and try to run A10 it GURU's, but as long as it isn't the first task
it works fine.

There are quite a few programs that don't like the way the memory is added to
the system and then again, others dont seem to mind. I can fill the RAM DISK
to the gills with junk and it wont crash. It wouldn't be so bad if it was
constant. I have another A1000 and a A3000 and they AUTOCONFIG... can I make
this one AUTOCONFIG?

I was guessing at the memory locations to use with the ADDMEM program, are they
wrong? How can I find out where they really are.

Oh yeah, the SI (System Information) program will run perfectly as long as
another program was fed to the crash-monster before its run. With the help of
POPCLI I can have several task windows open and once one of them has a fit and
returns a SOFTWARE FAILURE the others seem to run fine. So, I ran SI in
another CLI (after the first attempt crashed) and it reported 512k of CHIP RAM
at 000008E8 - 0007E7FF and 512k of FAS RAM at 0007E7800 - 000FB7FF.

Any help would be appreciated. I do not know what RAM card is in the machine.
I opened it up and looked inside and the RAM card looked like it was upside-
down with a few wires leaping all over the place. It looks like it was in there
correctly, but who knows. There wern't any distinctive markings on it.

Again, any help/info would be greatly appreciated.
